Replacing BW35 reverse light switch: do I have to remove the exhaust?

I have to replace a faulty reverse light switch on my BW35. The manual says I have to remove the exhaust pipe first. Is that actually really necessary, or is it in fact possible to fiddle spanners into the tunnel and swap the switch without first dismantling the exhaust?

It will be awkward, but you should be able to do it without removing the exhaust. You may have to grind the end of an OE spanner thinner, and bend it, and cut it though. Ajustment will be a PITA too, but less of a PITA than removing the manifolds and drilling out and tapping it for new studs.
