Rebuild cost guestimates

Hello,

Before plunging head first into V8 ownership, was wondering what the rough guestimated costs (GBP) would be for cam/followers, a top end or a full rebuild of a S1 P6 engine that is currently running but very 'lumpy'? Appreciate it is nearly impossible to price without specifics but a rough cost would be useful. Assuming stock spec and the work to be done professionally ideally by someone sympathetic to Rover.

Thanks in advance

Did this a few years ago. Crower cam and US made lifters plus a duplex chain and new front seal was under £250.

Check the Real Steel website and click rover V8 to download their parts list. Everything you could ever need complete with prices.

After you have stripped and measured everything and then priced the parts required the next step is to price the machining operations needed.

Example prices here. Machine shop prices vary !

Thank you both for the information and pointers. In days of old, had covered storage and would attempt much of it myself. Doing technical stuff in the road especially in winter is far less fun.

Ive joined my local Vintage Classic car Club. They have the "Mans Sheds " for Africa . Stuffed full of engineering and mechanical gear to keep our "old" cars on the road.
The big plus is, the guys in these sheds are nearly all retired engineers and mechanics all busting a gut to get their teeth into a job.
Great characters too. If you dont mind your leg pulled. Not for the timid.
Ive got a noisey hydraulic lifter in my P6b and presented to problem to the "boys".
Well - honestly talk about wanting to do a full motor reco right there and then. I had to shut the bonnet on them.
Im not a mechanic - just mechanically minded. As an aside, one of these "blokes" is ex factory Solihull. His heart rate doubled when I joined with a P6b.
Just sayin.

Hey, don't look a gift horse in the mouth !

Drive to the local bakery, buy 50 bucks worth of sausage rolls and cream cakes, go back to the shed, throw them the keys and let them at it. :)

I see where you are coming from.I like a good feed too. But how do I learn P6 mechanics if they take over and do it for me. I need to single out one gent to mentor me.

Joking aside, It is a great opportunity to collar some tech help and further your knowledge. You could also contribute to the shed's tool bank as a way of paying back for the help.

I knew you were pulling my leg- downside of the keyboard c/f making eye contact to ones recipient.
Any tools Ive still got ,are beyond redemption.
Never held much truck for using the right tool for the job. -kidding again.
The VCC clubs tool collection are often gifted by retired engineers/mechanics/workshops in leu of going to the dump.
Its happening more often as these tools are not need on these modern cars that we are offered nowadays.
Shame , but a reality.
Same with vintage and veteran cars - not the market for them as there used to be. Young fellas want twin cam, go fast hat on backwards cars.
Our era cars are next.

Over here there is a slowly growing sector of youngsters who are shunning modern tech and buying older cars that do not have computers and OBD ports, there is so much tech in their lives they want a car with zero tech so they can chill out and just drive.

It is a hopeful sign for keeping older cars around.

Hagerty insurance even have an event called the Festival of the Unexceptional and it is going from strength to strength.
