rear caliper piston doesn't retract

Piston will turn round and round (using a cotter pin removal tool) but doesn't seem to retract - other side did eventually (after spinning around 10 or so times...) Do both sides turn clockwise? Does it need pressure applied while turning? I can hear clicks every couple of spins..... any ideas...?....

Sounds like the threaded part is jammed. The clicking could be the internal pawl slipping. You can try taking the cover off the back of the caliper (just about possible in situ) and holding the serrated wheel while winding in the piston. It might be enough to free it. But to be honest, best thing would be to pull the caliper and check it out on a bench.

thanks buddy - frustrating - I really didn't need to change the pads now but figured it would be better to tackle it now while I'm still physically able to rather than 10 yrs in the future when they finally wear out....

I hear you :). People all get excited about the rear end work on a P6 but it’s not that bad in my experience. As long as you can get the big cover nut off the pivot it’s not that hard to get them off and work on them on a bench. I know some folks remove the disc and such. Personally I put a buck under the diff and remove the three bolts from the rear carrier plate to the diff housing. Then you can drop the diff and have easy access to the calipers etc. probably either way is just as easy, I’ve just got used to mine.

Job done and car road tested ok.... cup was binding on the serrated thingy..... fairly tough job removing rear calipers; I had adventures with the handbrake tappet and slippers, but now all seems to be well .......
