Rear Brake problem...

Hello!

New to this message board, looks cool!

Anyways!

I got a P6 V8, 1975, and i am renewing the rear pads. I managed to get the old ones out, but for the life of me i cant get the pistons to return... I read in the haynes that a special tool is required to turn the pistons back, this is something i dont have.

I have tried turning and pushing them to no sucess. Is there another way of doing it? Also what position should the handbrake arm be in?

Thanks in advance..
Jonathan
:D

Jonathan,
Handbrake off - Adjuster, which looks like a flat piece of steel with end bent at 90°, can be turned (with care) using a screwdriver - The special tool is not essential!
You can unscrew this and coat the threads with coppaslip grease then wind it back in.
Regards, John.

AH. Now should that part be atached to the piston? When i twist that part, it twists the piston aswell.

... now i wounder if my piston/adjuster are past were they threds start?

I am totaly new to this type of caliper, but i am confident mechanic, so i think i just dont understand how it works properly. Thanks for your advice...

the rear callipers are a funny affiar.

You will be thinking the when you press the brake or pull the hand brake the cylinder pops out and pushes the brake pad! well not on the p6.

The adjuster sits agains the pad doesn't move when operated. there are little cylinders which move the adjuster out. The thread which is behinf this part of the adjuster is turned by a rachet and pawl. I think there is a picture in the Haynes manual but it is worth stripping a spare one down just for the fun of it.

1) What you need to do is wind them back as far as possible with the tag at the top.
2) Pop the pads in.
3) pull the hand hrake on and off to adjust the pads.

3) take a bit of work you can also pres the pedal but takes a bit of time. Don't worry about get ting them both the same because they adjust independantly of each other.

If anyone knows a quicker way to readjust then let me know.

A point to note is should the ratchet and pawl be worn then the pads won't adjust but this isn't all that common really.

:0 Erm, that is so different! Now i understand more, so i can remove what i thought was the piston without bleeding the circuit again?

But sorry, i still dont unterstand how to get teh adjuster back into the caliper. I twisted it and nothing.

Think of the adjuster as a nut on a bolt, turn it either clockwise or anti clock wise I can't remember which. But one way it will come off the other tightens. try taking it of and greasing as john described.

This is a bit difficult without the special tool which is like a flat ratchet drive.

Have another go and it is hard because of the brake disc but the adjuster should turn 360 degrees.

You will find life a lot easier if you take the discs off, its not really a big job - only 8 bolts - you will then have plenty of room to get at the piston - water pump pliers will grip it well. Up on axle stands NOT ON THE DE DION TUBE - you will need to have at least one back wheel free to turn so you can rotate the disc to get the bolts off. And you will also need to move the driveshafts outwards slightly to release the disc. Consider changing the flexible brake pipes , top up the de dion tube and the diff whilst you are under there. Good luck and make sure everything is safe, secure & well chocked before you commit yourself.

:D :D :D :D Went out tonight and had another go, i reolised that when i took the parts that operate the handbreak off the calipers i left them in the on position. So, that seems to be why the piston wouldnt go back.

I have done one side and have the other to do tomorow!

I am glad and thankyou all for help! But the unfortunate part is that the car is out of mot and i noticed no bumpstops! Also its not the nicest car underneath, brake pipes are a little grotty...

Ill try to get it through an mot and go from there, i am using the car as back up for i road rally a Lada and need something in reserve to get to work, so 2 projects are a bad idea. Actualy i remember seeing a red p6 v8 on a rally about 1 years ago. :D

ok
Thanks all :) :) :)
