rear brake caliper rebuild

Hi all,

Having failed my mot on rear brakes i now have a slight problem. The piston cup assemblies (see picture) are very pitted. I cannot find any for sale anywhere. Does anybody know where I can get them, or maybe you have a serviceable pair I could beg, steal or buy? Or can I get away with them the way they are?
Many thanks.

Hi Clive.
You can clean them up a bit and will normally work ok ( as they are a mechanical piston) but if you want new ones a chap on Ebay p6 spares trades as Voking 2000 has them for sale at the moment.
Regards.
Clive.

Thanks Clive.
Took a look but they must have been sold. So taking a chance and re-fitting.

Most calipers that are dismantled have piston cups that look like that, and the majority of those calipers were working mechanically before being dismantled, so there's no reason why they shouldn't do so after reassembly.

Much obliged for the info, Harvey.

Thanks for the advice. I had been putting off doing the calipers, simply because it looked so complicated.
However, with the help of my trusty Hayne's manual it turned out to be simple.
The first one took me about 45 mins and the second about 20.
Handy tip: keep one caliper assembled while you strip and rebuild the other.
I now have brakes that stop on a dime.
Unfortunately, on the way to testing station my fuel pump gave up the ghost. Ah well.
Also looks simple to fix.

if outer working area of piston is corroded ..then ideally replace and DO check bores..if they too show corrosion .pits then exchange unit is best. ideally with stainless steel pistons. looking at the pic shown. I would have opted to replace .. however each has to make own decision .any pitting that ha spits travelling under a seal..will invariably leak at some stage. I worked on attitude that while I have callipers off, I really don't want to do it all again so simply replaced mine though mechanically OK . handbrake wasn't up to scratch . exchange calipers sailed through MOT. ( already did the check not on stops, handbrake adjust . etc )

I had my mechanical pistons rechromed with full triple plate. Cost about $20 each. You can't do it if they are deeply rusted though. You do need to take the inner pieces out. There is a spring clip on the outside which you need to get something under then screw a bolt of the correct size into the centre piece and lever it out. Be careful how you clamp the piston as you can break the tab plate off the other end. You can turn mine with one finger now as the chrome is so slippery!
