It has been done and the thread is on here .
If your not good with wires and you have to pay some sparky $100 to sort it out , you may as well go to Repco or Supercheap and get the real deal with USB MP3 etc for $99.

I did this mod a while back and it works a treat, but largely depends upon how confident you are with electronics

Nice idea cause I'm now curious to see if there is such a thing as classic/retro looking digital car hifi. Hope to not lose the original look.

relatively simple job to install an AUX input socket on the radio, just need an appropriate stereo 3.5mm socket with a switch contact and a miniature double pole double throw 12 Volt relay plus a few odd resistors for matching and some audio coax cable.

there is, there name is like 'Retro Radios' The cores I think are American but they seem to make faces for local cars locally, eg. holden faces for Australia made there but guts from US. There are a number of different types with a variety of options so shop around.

That doesn't look like a standard fit radio, though may be an NZ standard one... they essentially slide into a slot. probably has a securing screw in the bottom, accessed by taking the speaker panel (directly below radio) off and reaching in the hole. I'll just go check on a centre console I have which is off the car.

er I've had a look, forget what I just said... there are two screws (one into each side) into the back side corners of the radio into small plastic extensions of the console, accessed from behind the console via the gloveboxes. undo them and it should slide out forward bar wiring.

Adding aux to classic car radio. I think you need a switched stereo jack plug at one end of a length of screened 2 core coax (switched so the radio returns to radio when the mp3 player is not plugged into the stereo jack at the end of the coax) and at the other end of the 2 core coax you need to convert to mono. I believe each of the 2 cores of the 2 core coax needs to go to one of two resistors (I think they are each 10 k ohms). The other ends of the two resistors then need to be twisted together and soldered and attached to the "AF in" on the radio. The braid needs to go to earth. The "AF in" goes to the "hot side" of the volume control. To make it easy on the Radiomobile 1085, and some other classic radios, there is a label at the rear of the radio with the words "remove to fit tape recorder". Behind this label is a hole. Behind that is a PCB with a row of 5 connecting points. I believe these are 1. Earth, 2. Supply voltage, 3.AF in (hot side of the volume control), 4. AF Out (from the radios diode detector), and 5. Signal ground (cold side of volume control). If this is correct the 2 resistors at the other end of the 2 core coax from the switched jack plug go connector 3 (AF in) the centre connector of the 5 connectors on the rear of the PCB behind the hole for fitting a tape recorder. I have not done this but believe it to be correct so get a second opinion before doing it. Can anyone confirm I am correct?

Buy a bluetooth receiver and amplifier, both can easily be hidden in the radio console. Hide an on off switch in the ashtray....

Going to give this a bash with my radiomobile, will take pics and see if I can help others via my various mistakes.

I currently run a retro sound system on mine. Not sure if the radio fitted was original, but the retro sound unit fit onto the original faceplate. Bit exy, but it does have aux, Bluetooth audio and phone, plus two USB inputs.

Yes please, looking to change mine to something with more than one speaker!

Sorry for the delay.
Here is the retro sound unit in my 75.
I haven't taken too much time with the USB and aux inputs just yet as I plan on replacing the carpet very soon.
I haven't had any issues so far, and am pretty happy with it. Like I said before it was exy, around 450 from memory, and that's just for the head unit.
Also not shown in the pictures is the Bluetooth speaker for handsfree phone use that runs up the a pillar.
