Has anyone spotted that Danny Hopkins put new followers in his P6 and kept the old cam ? This magazine is fast becoming a comic

He probably wanted to save a bit of cash in these hard times. He should have phoned me and I could have saved him a bit more, I've got a load of old followers laying around in the garage.....

And they've done an article on servicing a v8 p6 and missed out some crucial details...

No surprise there........ Looks like I'll be spending half an hour in Sainsbury's reading that then....

:)

immediate things that occurred after a quick scan were no mentions of zddp in oil, and they certainly dont give the low down on checking atf levels properly. I'm sure there's more. They talk about adjusting kickdown to a set distance rather than till it behaves too....

Steady on Guys , this is heading towards a negative review
Tis getting harder to read and take seriously of late though . Whatever it is your all talking about that is :?

:D not quite - it's probably pretty important to see if we can get any errors or omissions corrected otherwise people are likely to do what they read and damage their cars.

I've put a post in the feedback section on their forum. See what they say :)

 That'll be why I keep finding so many well thumbed copies of classic car mags in my local supermarket (the modern equivalent of the library reading room  ).

I don't believe any PC staffers read the forum. Danny has been talking to Mark Gray, so I would have thought he'd be getting good advice

As you will have seen in the article concerned, I was involved with this particular adventure in PC's workshop and I can tell you that the cam stayed in place because it was in far better condition that the followers. I would go so far as to say that whomever had rebuilt the engine prior to Danny's ownership, had indeed replaced the cam with a new one but had then put the knackered followers, chain and chain gears back in, and they certainly had never evacuated the old oil out of the old followers. That was evident with the three followers that were solid due to old crap oil and yet another which had collapsed internally, hence the decision to replace only the followers was taken. That said a new chain and chain gear would be of some benefit in the not too distant future but then I'm sure that will make another 'Staff Saga' article on another day.

Danny, unfortunately is confined to what he can say negatively because of his position and the confinds of a published magazine, so some things will always have to be somewhat watered down.
Likewise I thought there were rules on this forum about negative product feedback, I mean on the top of this page that I am looking at, it quite clearly says in red,
"Please do not post negative supplier / product reviews,"
Therefore PC Magazine being a product surely must come under this rule.

The product being the magazine, may well be a good product in itself, but as it contains information,"which may or may not be correct", that is directed at,and available to the public,ie classic car enthusiasts,,some of who will act on it,and believe all that is printed and said is true, questions about any potential mistakes, errors, misinformation should be raised!
The classic car magazines in general get info right, but are not immune to making cock ups,and of omitting important info for the sake of lineage space!!
Nothing that any of them write about should really be taken as gospel!

It was stated that the cam had no significant wear, but the followers did, suggesting they had not been replaced, therefore a new set of followers could be fitted, and would, should bed in properly.
Just dropping the followers in a bucket of 20/50 to lube them up,wont make a blind bit of difference what the ZDDP content is.

About 8 yrs ago my engine developed a tap,I found that it was the seals in 1 follower had failed,I just happened to have a few in a box of spares,s/h yes,but showing minimal wear.
I fitted one of these, and its still going strong!
As the rest were perfect,I took the chance, rather than fit a whole new cam and followers!

Neil Campbell approved the post....
I thought I did, unless you posted it twice because it didn't appear the first time. A lot of new posters do, because of our anti-spam measures. They probably all go out with Neil's name on because he's the founder of the forum.

There are a few other "practical " classic car mags on ther market .Any one recommend any ?
I've been subscribing to Practical Classics for donkey's years and it' s definitely gone downhill in recent years

i like to read practical classics and it's arch rival classics monthly. Both good reads...

Likewise Rich, I too read both. Sometimes either or both are a great read and sometimes they're not, but I have picked up a lot of useful information from them over the years that I may not necessarily have got from elsewhere. I tend to hold much more store in those articles written by full-time professionals in their automotive field rather than enthusiatic journalists.

Unfortunately the diminishing buying public are contributing to the demise of all magazines and the knock on effect of reduced income is the resulting perceived (or real) lack of quality depending on your point of view.
Sadly most magazines and newspapers will probably go the way of the Dodo in time. Anyone who remembers pre-internet Club Membership will know how difficult communication was via the Club mag purely because of the time delay.

Slightly straying off topic, I remember getting online in 1998 and joining Rovernet the US based forum as there was nothing available in the UK. Even Ebay UK didn’t exist hence my Ebay account is still all billed in USD cos I joined Ebay.com the US site.
I can only describe those initial few months/years as an eye opener, talking to fellow enthusiasts and sharing information almost instantly. Of course familiarity breeds contempt and now we take it for granted and feel frustrated if the forum is ‘down’ for a few days (not moaning honest guv)
So poor old P.C. is a victim of progress rather than incompetence.
