Power steering hose

Hi All, Can anyone please help/advise?. The power steering hose on my 1971 V8 where it passes between the engine and the radiator (the "sponge" type protection) is gradually disintegrating and doesn't look good, okay, it is nearly 50 years old!, can anyone suggest a method to improve the appearance and perhaps the efficiency without the need to dismantle the hoses. I will attach a photo.

That looks gnarly! Doesn't look as if it is the original material, so much as a bodge by a previous owner that hasn't held up at all well! Looks as if you could carefully cut it along the length of the hose and prise it off, which has got to be a cheap and cheerful start! Nice fresh cutting blade, lots of illumination, a steady hand, job could be a good 'un.

It's normal. Seen it on more than a few cars.
 
Mine wasn't that bad. I made it look a lot better by cutting some mouse mat foam and just sticking it around the gnarls :)

Yep used to have exactly the same on mine before I traded my PAS system for an Edelbrock Performer and 500 carb with somebody. Good deal that was, especially as I’m using the ZF pump from the 4.6 now..:)
 
On my LHD PAS NADA that I am trying to restore, the pump outlet hose - recently received new - is manufactured such that it passes very close to the manifold as it does not loop around the engine. I thought this was iffy and of course I chucked the old one away to compare. Does anyone have a pic showing where the NADA hose “should” go.
 
Hi Fellas, Thanks for the replies, yeah it don't look good does it but I'm certain it is the original as I have had the car for more than 45 years and nearly all the history.

looks like outer 'skin'? has reacted with heat /oil and age. blistering and looking rough can be normal at that age. new hose would of course look better. though if we do not want to replace hose (fear of leak/snapped connection etc) oen can easily buy heat shielding online. sleeve of heat resistant material with respective retention fittings out to work easily enough.
 
Domestic air conditioner pipe insulation is available from hardware shops in various internal sizes and can be slit and placed on in the manner Quattro did. 1 metre/ yard of the stuff is probably cheaper than a mouse mat and already curved. alternatively Bicycle handlebar tape could be wrapped around after scraping the gunk flat. I just cleaned off the gunk and left it...
 
I was fitting an EDIS system as part of the Megasquirt fuel injection.

Ahh megasquirt, I do now that, make pcb,s once in past, I am electronic guy design most audio high end and speakers.

Somewhere I have schematics of a system who can do this for normal carbs, all is integrated into a processor and has a display
you can plugin to adjust ignition delay, also for lpg.

I mean this one, mine I can not find, looks like windows or virusscanner sometimes delete files, false detect.

 
I have one of those. Plus their CDI ignition. Simple to make and inexpensive. It allows one to programme out the pinking on high compression engines.
Kees, you wouldn't have run across Dr George Raicevich in your work? hes a former P5 owner from the NSW club. specialises in Electro acoustics
 
I was forgotten the pictures. This system is not a squirt, it works with normal carbs and als can use
contact points. But has nice stuff extra like map sensor, and knock sensor. nice for high compression engines.

it works with a pic, I have firmware and asm. It's rights owner designer are Mr Clark and posted in Sillicon chip.
