Posting Pictures

Hi, and welcome to the Classic Rover Forum! :D

As we’re very fond of pictures on the forum, a few words on how to add them to a post might not go amiss!

There are 2 ways to do it: as an attachment to your post (the easiest way, but see the note on file size below) or by using a picture-hosting site and creating a link to pictures you’ve stored on there.

As an attachment
. Note - the maximum attachment file size is 512 kb. If your file is bigger than this, you can reduce it using an image editing program. These are freely available on the internet (e.g. IrfanView). Alternatively, use a picture-hosting site as described below.

When you click to start a new forum topic or post a reply on an already-running topic, a window opens for you to type your post. Underneath this window you'll see 2 tabs - click on the one marked "Upload attachment" and a box will appear with a button marked "Browse".

Click on this Browse button and an Explorer window will open - use this to browse to the picture on your computer you want to upload. Click on the filename to highlight it and click "Open" Your filename will then appear in the textbox. Click the "Add the file" button the file will load to the site in a few seconds and you will see its filename appear as a posted attachment.

Underneath the filename there will be 2 new buttons. Click "Place inline" and the attachment text will appear in your original message window. If you then click the "Preview" button you should see the picture appear. Nothing has been posted to the thread at this point so you can carry on editing and typing in your post. You can Preview as many times as you like and, once you're happy with your final preview, click Submit. And that's it!

Picture-hosting
There are loads of free hosting sites around, such as flickr, imageshack, photobucket, etc, etc, which you can use for larger files. I use photobucket, which you can find by clicking >here<

You’ll need to create an account, then just follow the site instructions to create an album and upload pictures from your computer to it. In the album settings make sure it's set as a public, rather than a private, album.
Once you've uploaded and saved your pictures, hover your cursor over a picture and 4 lines of code will appear beneath it. The bottom line is the IMG Code, which is the one you want. Click this line and the code is copied to your clipboard. Return to your posting, right-click in the posting box, select Paste, and the IMG code is copied into your posting. Click the Preview button to check the picture is visible. Again, nothing has been posted to the thread at this point so you can carry on editing and typing in your message. You can Preview as many times as you like and, once you're happy with your final preview, click Submit. And, again, that's it!

Remember that if you delete your photo from your hosting space, it will no longer show up in your forum post.

Have fun…and let’s see those pics!

Cheers for now,
Stan

Looking good Tom...and no doubt known as 'The Magic Dragon'...

...although you might not be nowhere near old enough to crack that! :)

Welcome aboard!

i got it lol puf the magic dragon
needs a little bit of work but i will get there
most important thing is its on the road and im enjoying it

Just a little update on posting pictures, Flikr no longer allow photos hosted on their site to be used in forum posts.

In quite some topics people posted rather large pictures, which means I have to scroll inside the picture frame to see all of it. Isn't it a good idea to limit the size of pictures on the forum? What's used on most other fora is a maximum size in the region of 800x600. Just a wild thought. :)

Thijs, I found that problem, but I have just discovered that if I click on the pictures they become full size, with out the scroll bars.
John.

Please bear in mind, falkor, that this forum is hosted on Richard's work server. I could imagine a very large memory requirement if we were all to use this forum as a host for all our photo's and I don't think Richard's work would be too chuffed about that. We don't pay any membership to be on here and it is easy to join, so I really don't see the issue with restrictions on visitors. The three of us as moderators keep out unwanted input.

I have to say, I really don't see the advantage of having a gallery. One of the nice things, to my mind, of this forum is that we get to chat to the member about their cars when they post pictures. If you had a gallery all you'd get is a load of pictures of P6's with no context or interaction with the owners. I don't see the point of that. I can do that elsewhere on the web, on Rudigers site for instance, and the point of this site is for owners to chat amongst themselves.

Have a look at Frazzle's posts. If all that were to happen was that he put all his pictures up in a gallery we would all lose out on a terrific amount of enjoyment.

I'd be very interested to hear contrasting views to this, but I really don't see why, just because something is possible, we should do it.

Please remember that the site owner - Richard - is very much under the weather at the moment and in and out of hospital. At the end of the day it's him we have to persuade of the need for any change, and I think that can wait perfectly adequately until he is back on his feet. We don't want him to charge us for access do we!

Well said Chris

Photos are nothing here without context.

100% with you Chris and I have been helped out massively time and again by the photos, but only when they are needed and with the text to explain the photo. Everyone here I think agrees that this is an excellent forum what's the old adage
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Cheers Mick

If anyone here is struggling to add pics email them to me and I can host them for you no problem.

If money really is the problem pass the database to me

I'll run the whole lot from Blackfoot for nothing  including any very large memory requirement :D (not that I accept that argument but hey  )

Thank you for the kind offer, Falkor, but we have a number of options open to us should there be any problem with Richard's work server.

Chris

Sorry forgot to mention, if you need instructions on how to use the Rover P6 Club gallery, give me a shout by direct message and I'll let you know how it works.
The pictures stored in it can be used for forums with no issues and we have plenty of storage space on the clubs server.

Thanks to Gaz for posting this...

If you need to resize your pictures before uploading, try the handy online service http://www.picresize.com/
I've tested it and it works great. It's also pretty straight forward, as a suggestion, in the "Resize your picture" section, choose "Custom Size" and set the width to 800 pixels, this will give you forum friendly images.

In fact, even easier, use this http://www.picresize.com/?prewidth=800 which is preset to 800 pixels wide.

Why are my pics still too big after resize on photobucket, here is what i do
1) go to edit photos and select the pic
2) select resize, then 160x120 then apply
3) scroll down and click replace original
load onto forum and its still massive
