hi all. have read that 3500 had different points before and after 72. mine is a 72. when i bought my car it had elec ign on it already so dont know what points i need. how do i tell the difference.

There are 3 types of points, which fit to 3 different baseplates. The early type are smaller than a normal set, the later types are larger, (about the size of most contact sets), and one set has a pin on the bottom that goes through the baseplate and into the vac unit arm, the other doesn't have the pin as the vac unit arm is fixed between the two parts of the baseplate. The only way to tell is by looking at the baseplate, or possibly from the distributor number, but that's not failsafe as the baseplate may have been changed.

That's the later type with the larger points, so buy the set of points with the pin on the bottom, as your electronic pickup has a pin on the bottom. Make sure that you locate that pin into the arm from the vac unit when you refit it, otherwise the baseplate, and hence the timing, will be floating around all over the place. I always bought the points with the pin, so if I needed the pin it was there, if I didn't I just cut the pin off.
