Petrol fumes

Morning All ,
Been on a couple of 3 mile trips up a 2 mile hill recently and while the engine is working hard there is a smell of petrol in the cabin .
I can't find any signs of leaks and it does not seem to smell on the short 1 mile journey to work each day .
I have looked in the engine bay and checked tank and pipes under car there is just over quarter of a tank of fuel .
Any suggestions would be gratefully received , Russ

Use a different route so you don't go up hill...............................

Sorry !

May be one of the carbs is flooding and as there are pipes taking the fuel to the ground you cannot see it.

Try taping a paint can lid or other small pot under the overflow pipes and see if you get any fuel in them, you are only doing a short trip so this might reveal the problem.

Check the condition of the vent pipes coming from the top of the fuel tank in the boot going to behind the D pillar panel on the left hand side. Sometimes the plastic cracks and you can smell it inside the cabin.

How do I remove the cover please ?

If you drive with the window open, you can create a partial vacuum in the cabin which will draw any fumes into the car from the engine bay or boot.

To remove - pull the seat squab up, remove the two screws holding the back in place, and lift the seat back upwards to remove. There are two screws holding the inner D post cover in place, remove these then wiggle the cover about whilst pulling it sharply forward. Then cuss it, shake your fist at it, and scream, it should then come out.

:)

What year it the car? Early cars had HD8 carbs. When the floats sink or stick, the carb will overflow, and drip petrol onto the exhaust manifold. An unsatisfactory situation! You will hear the drip drip drip sizzle when you stop, and you will smell it too!

Even when working properly with no overflow, these carbs have an vented top, and I smell a bit of gas on mine on a hot day.

It's got a single carb on it not sure of model

Other options is, is it fuel or oil from the engine pressurising when it works harder? Is the pcv system clean? Just a thought.

Think l found the reason for petrol fumes in car, the filler neck has 2 rubber connector hoses and 2 of the 4 jubilee clips were loose. I filled the tank to the top this week and yesterday noticed the smell was very strong so got a torch and found fuel on nearside wheel arch in boot. Hopefully another job fixed until the next one .
Thanks for the info of you all

I too have fumes in the cabin. I've removed the inside of the D panel and no lines. The repair manual shows these vent pipes and suggest removing the rear wing and then. Do this and that. Help. lewill
