Is it possible to convert my manuell steering to PAS, and if so, does anyone now where to get hold of the parts ? My car is a 1972 3500 Auto LHD. Living in Oslo/Norway, and will of course refund all freight charges etc..

:) :)

Hi Petter

Yes it is quite possible to convert to PAS, you will need to change the sterring box, the idler, steering track rod ends, possibly the sterring side rods, and I am not sure if the crankshaft pulley will need changing or not.

You will also need the PAS reservoir, pipes, pump and fixing brackets (all mounting points should be on the car).

I would imagine that the work will require patience as there is a lot to do and not much room to work in!

Is your car LHD or RHD? Probably easier to get a scrapcar & remove all the parts you need that way you can be sure you get all the parts you need, I believe UK suppliers found on the links at this web site can provide the bitsyou need.

Good luck

Gary

hi,
i have given Petter a number of a guy in the states for getting a power steering system, being LHD, unless he can find a scrapper where he is. but he does not need to change steering side rod arms, idler or crank pulley. the crank pulley is used with a bolt on pulley to run the pump, track rod arm is different, but only in the respect of the non PAS arm is threaded at both ends and the PAS arm is threaded at only one end as you struggle to get to the other when the power steering box is in. all holes are there for mounting the power steering system apart from the three holes you will have to drill to fasten the reservoir bottle. i hope that clears it up for you Petter. ( i do not want to be funny but the guy wants help, not you might need this and you might need that, if your not sure let someone who knows write what he needs)

I am somewhat incensed by your un-called for remark. This is a Forum for the exchange of views, opinions and observations and a comment like the one you have made is negative and un-warranted!

It is insensitive remarks like this that create ill-will & bad-feeling, and quite frankly my comments to another member are none of your business!

I would ask that you think carefully before making your remarks in future it does not do anyone any good and leads to a polarisation - not good.

hi gary,
sorry if i have upset you, but if you are not sure of what is needed then i think it is my business, especially if you are informing someone what they need when they don't. would you like to be informed that you needed all of what you said, gone out and bought it and then realised you did not need half of it and you had paid for it. so i do think it is my business when you are informing someone else and misleading them to what they do and don't want. i hope this helps Petter as i have done to many conversions so do know what he needs.

Thanks a lot to all of you. I have been in contact with the guy in South California, and he his more than willing to part with one of his many P63500 Federal. I am currently looking into the possibilities of shipping one of them back to Europe, and use this car as a donor. The car has both PAS, AC and also power windows, all working according to seller. This might seems like a expencive solution, but bear in mind that I am living in Norway, where you pay more than £ 5,- for a pint
of beer !!!!

:p

Hi Petter,
i have had a lot of stuff from him and i am glad you contacted him. it has all been good stuff he has sent me, so i can say he is a good honest guy and if he says it is all working it will be. all the best.

hi again petter,
another thought if you do get it it will be an excellent base unit being from california, my point being, what is your car like, do you get a lot of salt on your roads in a winter, is your base unit good. if not how about putting the californian car on the road.

ian

Hi Ian !!

Thanks a lot for your advices. My car has a solid base unit, so what I actually need, is the parts for the PAS and of course the power windows and AC. However, I will keep the rest of the car and if time and money allows me, I will try to rebuild a second car. As you probably are aware of, the winters in Norway are pretty harsh, so I keep my car of the road during the winter months. Right now it's 15 degrees below and 70 centimeters of snow in Oslo !!! :(
