P6 V8

Hello I have just joined the forum.I`ve owned 6 P5Bs and P4s in the past and now I fancy a P6 3.5.What can I expect to pay for a good solid one,I don`t mind if it needs re-upholstering as long as the body is good. I have also read that with the 3.5Manual the gearboxes may not be up to it,is this right. There is one on cars and classics which is a 3500S manual at £8475 it looks OK but obviously would need viewing. Is it best to stay with the later 3500 manual.I remember having rear seal problems on the P5B with a rope seal, but I believe the 74 models cured this.Any help would be welcome Len Cottam

4 speed v8 boxes are not overly strong, BUT if you bu a car with a good gearbox if you dont drive it hard then in my opinion you dont have too much to worry about

Or you could swap it out for the later LT77 SD1 5 speed box, a very tried and true conversion.

Thanks for the advice so far.I have been looking on the web at a car in Northamton £8495,it says it has 9000 on the clock, but when I phoned I was told they could not prove it.I went onto the DVLA site and looked at the past history and it was 9000 then a couple of years ago it was 18000 and before that 9000 .Also there was a list as long as your arm of failures ,most years .It makes you wonder if they were all corrected. I`ve restored about 30 cars over the years and it`s a minefield Len

I've driven 4spd V8s for 20 years over probably 50k miles without any gearbox issues.....

It's like the Triumph Herald's rear transverse leaf suspension (which we've owned) - everyone says how badly they 'tuck in', but you've got to be doing about 50 mph turning right on a mini roundabout to notice.. :p

Reference to the mileage discrepancy
It looks like the mot inspector has made an error and has put a 1 before the eight on that mot. I think the owner can get apply to get this changed.
All of the mileage looks to be correct
hopefully there will also be paperwork service history to back this up you would hope.
Things like pre 2006 mot certs would be helpful, hopefully there are lots of old mots to view pre 2006 to confirm this.
If not available then it would be hard to confirm if this was the correct mileage.

The company has no history and what put me off was the amount of items it failed on in the past few years
With no history your guess is good as mine mileage wise. Yes I did notice it had lots of things that needed attention. For the price you would expect a peach not a pig.

The amount of reported corrosion would worry me , later cars didn't fair well in that area.
I would want to fully inspect the base unit very carefully.

It worried me.I am not saying anything, but they said it would have a new MOT before sale, but I would like receipts to show work done. This is one I will leave.I have had an email from a member with one for sale soon, which I m really interested in.My classic Mercedes is on sale this week so I am crossing fingers

Well you obviously did a good job and know your stuff to look up the history of a car well done to you and top marks. This just proves the point that rushing in is not a good idea and you obviously have the skills of spotting a lemon. Car and classic have some V8 P6 for sale if that is your thing, or are you just looking for the V8 S ?
3500 are not big money sometimes you can pick up a very nice one very cheaply no way in the region of the dealers market value a rover p6 is not that rare just yet.
Whatever your choice I wish you good luck and may it run perfectly for you.

I have been provisionally offered a P6 V8 by a member of the club, which shows a full restoration.I have explained that I have to sell my classic Mercedes, but that doesn`t seem to be a problem as regards time. From the information he has been kind enough to give me I am more than just interested. In the meantime I have to concentrate on selling my car. Thanks for all the useful advice, which shows how impotant a car forum can be .Len

I had a car offered to me ,however I am selling the Mercedes as there is nothing to do on it and I have decided I only want a car that is a running restoration
