P6 V8 Starter or Solenoid Dead?

Hello all,

Our trusty family P6 was running like a dream last weekend, two big trips around the country, motorways and traffic and didn't miss a beat. Parked up at home for two hours then went to restart and just got a clicking sound - first thought I'd left something electrical on but a new battery wired in did the same, bridging the solenoid nuts with a screwdriver just sparked and did nothing. Bump started fine so have not got it in the garage and wondering if the starter has jammed (even tried hitting it with a hammer but still clicking the same) or something else? Initial crawlings around underneath makes it look a bit tricky to get the starter out....happy to do that if it sounds like a dead/jammed starter, but would rather not if it sounds like something else.

Any advice welcomed.

Cheers

Joe

Try rocking the car backwards and forwards in a high gear, that may free it up if it's jammed. Check also the engine earth strap. If that's loose, it will affect the starter in the manner you have described.

Check all the battery/cable connections just to make sure you haven't a voltage drop to the starter

Thanks folks, connected a jump lead between body and block and it started up fine, so I checked the earth strap this morning and although it all looked ok at first glance when I gave it a wiggle it was clear that it had broken. These cars really are great, nice simple fix, lovely!

Cheers
