P6 Towbar

Hi, I am new to the forum and have just bought a Rover P6 2200SC. I am wondering if anyone has a towbar they might sell? There is one on EBay right now but it does not look like others I have seen in photos so will probably avoid it. Thanks.

There are a few different tow bars that fit, but this is the common one

Hello Gordon. I have one broadly the same as Quattro's photo above. Assuming your car has it's original bumper without overriders then it's the correct bar. If overriders are fitted you need the angled bar which clears them.
£90 including postage up to you.

I believe the standard bars, like TRMs do fit, but you have to move the overriders to the other side of the bumper bracket so they are further out on the bumper. Some people are ok with this look, but it may be an idea that you try to move them to see if you like it, before fitting a tow bar.

Not the best picture, but it's the only one I have.
 
Down here in Oz there is a locally made bar (assumption!) that consists of a tube about the length between the bumper irons, bumper irons welded to it, and ears for the bumper to fit to.

There are plates for mounting a towing tongue as in above pic. Bumper iron detail.

The towing tongue is like this - usually in better shape, and chromed.

If the tongue is removed the bar is pretty much invisible.

When I first got the car there was something off in the alignment of the bumper mounts , and even with the overriders very outboard they tended to to touch the rear edge of the boot lid, especially on the right. In the end I pulled the bumper, checked it against a spare , and swapped them. This moved the bumper back and now the clearances are more normal. In looking at ways to move the tow bar and bumper backwards I found there was very little scope , the mounting holes in the mounting irons close to the end.
Got pretty tired of R&R'ing the overriders! If you move your overriders , check boot lid clearance!

I am tempted to just buy your towbar. As I see it I have 3 options - 1. Fit it without the overriders, 2. Move the overriders as per the photos, 3. Modify it to clear the overriders (cut clearance notches and weld in some strengthening plates).

That isn't the only style of towbar around. Others are available that let you leave the overriders in place. The cross bar is closer to the body giving more bar to bumper clearance.

I guessed they would have been available, but the issue is finding a second hand one these days.
