P6 Timing and Points Question

Hi There,

I'm new to the Rover World. I've just bought anice 3500 P6 and would like to check the timing/points. Can anyone tell me please -
a) Where is a 12v connection under the bonnet for me to clip my timing light to?
b) How does one crank the engine from under the bonnet (so I can get the cam lobe on open in the distributor for points gap checking)

Very much obliged for any assistance you canrender.

John

Morning
a) coil + or washer bottle +
b) Put car in high gear and gently rock back / forth until points on cam.

Thanks for this. How about if the car is an automatic? I don’t think the rolling works in this instance?

turn the engine using the fan blades, you might need to push on the alternator belt to give it more tension to make the fan pulley grip it

You can set the points with a feeler gauge to get an initial setting so it will run if you want, although most of the time there's no need, but once it's running they need to be set using a dwell meter.

when I had points ..( swapped dizzy for full electronic) I simply set crank to timing mark BTDC . dizzy was slack so can rotate ... used. feeler gauge for rough guide and moved dizzy to just on point of opening.
dizzy moveable but not 'loose'. started . I used spare battery for a 12v. strobe and dwell supply. set dwell with meter as per manual .. then reset timing ( any adjustment on dwell affects timing) .nipped up dizzy ..so far so good .no pinking .runs sweetly ( part from ongoing hot fuel issues!) oh and adjusted idle ..mine. isn't happy under 700 rpms ..as get a bit lumpy ( I have an auto)

When I had a V8 with points, it was necessary to set it up with dwell meter, setting the gap only got it running initially.

Thank you all very much. I’ve got it running quite nicely with your advice. Timing is spot on, I have a timing light but no dwell meter. I will get one and fine tune, however I may have just gotten lucky. Interesting the manual says to set at 650 rpm but mine was idling at 1000rpm. I took it down to 800 but anything lower and it didn’t like it.

The timing marks on the front pulley (or rather the pointer) are often a long way out, so it may be best to check that for accuracy.
