P6 series 1 wiring diagram needed.

We have a P6 3500 v8 with a series 1 wiring. After not starting her for a couple of weeks, on starting noticed smoke coming from under dash. Switched it off and looked the white wire from the ignition has melted through the plastic which has effected the other cables also. Does anyone have a wiring dragram so we can try to trace where this goes without going at it blind. We do know it doesn't go into the engine bay. Any advice would be truly welcome.

Hi, I've looked at my copy of the diagram (sorry I can't show it as my scanner is U/S). The white from the ignition switch goes to three places, the coil, the fuse box and the relay for the 11ac alternator control. The coil and the fuse box are in the engine bay and the alt control relay is tucked up under the dash on the bulkhead/'A' post.

Hi, /\/\/\

39 = Ignition sw
4 = Alt control relay
31 = Ballast resister then 41 coil
62 = Fuse box

Thanks Guys,
I stripped back some of the loom to check how far any damage went, there is obvious damage as far as where the loom runs up into the bulkhead, although at this point in the loom it seems to be just the white wire that is damaged. I have had advice that the switch may be the culprit, and looking at the damage at the switch end, this looks to be quite likely. The plug has actually melted.

I have access to another switch to prove the point, albeit it means stealing it off of my sons car, but I am worried that if the fault lies somewhere else, I could end up doing more damage.

I hate electrics! It looks like a massive job to replace the loom, I am hoping this is recoverable.

Hi, When you switch the ignition on the white wire gets powered up, to do that damage the white wire is going straight to earth somewhere. All you need to do is find where.;) So you're looking for the wire being chaffed through onto the body. Follow the damaged white wire looking for the culprit component or place. It could just be a wire adrift and touching the body or even water has got in the relay, although that's unlikely as the there's battery power in there as well. Try unplugging each component and switching the ignition on again and then go round touching the wires back on the components briefly to see which has the most effect. If it still does it with them all unplugged then there is damage in or to the loom.

Right, so I am now a bit more clued up and having followed the advice, I checked through each circuit. Following the power wire from the switch, it splits into four, three go forward, fuse box, back of the dash and ignition circuit, the other goes rearward. I wired each one separately and rigged a 30 amp fuse, then turned the ignition on. There were no issues at the front when wired separate, in fact when I wired all of the circuits together, the car starts and runs and all seems fine. When I reconnected the lot, my fuse popped. Checking the rearward loom carefully, I have found a lot of damage going towards the rear of the car. Further along, there is also evidence of burnt wires in the boot where the loom comes through by the back seats. From this I surmise that my problem was in that circuit somewhere. The damage is such that it looks like it will be easier to get a complete rear loom from a breaker and splice it in, effectively re-wiring the rear end.

Two questions?
Does my logic seem sound?
Anyone breaking one and have the rear loom available?

Cheers,
Mike

Hi, The rear loom is separate, the main loom going back goes into the top of the 'A' post and out again at the bottom before going to the rear of the car. There are two multi plugs that join the main to the rear and they are usually tuck into the 'A' post, there is quite a bit of slack in it so if you pull the loom up at the top the plugs should appear. There is no need for ignition power to go to the rear of the car, however the only likely high power load at the rear is the rear screen heat element but that goes through the HRW switch so something else to check. Also check the loom as it runs along the car floor under the seat mount brackets and up under the rear seat, if the car has had any welding done it may have got burnt or the loom may be damaged by other means.

Happy hunting.
