P6 Seat Adjustment

Hello,

I’ve just put down a deposit on a P6 (1974 3500 auto). I haven’t taken delivery yet, so will probably have even more silly questions when I do!

On the test drive, the seat didn’t quite go far enough forward for me to be fully comfortable (I’m only 5’4). I assume it must go much further forward than it did. The seat runner seemed to only have a very small travel on it.

Is this correct, and would the seat need bolting further forward, or should it have a greater travel and it’s likely something needs lubricating?

Just wondering if the seats in a P6 do actually go quite far forward. Thanks :)

Seat travel should be OK even for you, but...the pedal heights are adjustable. Normally all 3 pedals are at the same height (makes heel-n-toe easy), so check yours. There is only one fixing point on the floor for the runners, and studs for the seat to bolt onto AFAIK. Get a copy of the WSM and parts book (1977 ed is best) - if you can wake up the P6 club they sell soft copies - I have had no luck there so far, but you may have better luck if in UK.

I didn’t realise the pedal heights are adjustable - I presume the steering wheel position is adjustable too then? I think if the seat went further forward I probably wouldn’t be able to make use of the door mirrors, so I imagine the pedals are at their lowest position. I’ll definitely be getting copies of those, thank you.

Hi, Compare it with the passenger seat to check it has the same travel. There may be something in the runner stopping it having full travel. The runners bolt to welded in pedestals on the floor, the top of the runners have four studs sticking up which the seat bolts onto. So you could try redrilling the seat base to move it forward on the runners.

The pedal heights are adustable, but only so that they can be set to the correct position, you can't bring them closer to the driver, only raise or lower the pedal height, and if that's set incorrectly it can give you other problems.

It is, but I think you'll find that's only for tilt, not for reach.

I would be looking at the seat runner first.

Thanks for the replies. If worst comes to the worst I can drive it as is (I probably sit too far forward usually anyway), but just a fraction further forward would make a great difference.

I’ll check the runner, maybe it hasn’t been that far forward in 47 years so has got a bit stiff!

Rover tended to make their drivers seats have a lot of for & aft travel , more than most . I believe they had one or two chosen people from the whole employee pool who were asked in to the design dept. to test new vehicle seating to check it would be OK for the shortest & tallest.

I didn't want to be too rough with it having not bought the car at the time of viewing, but I suspect it might just be a bit stiff. I did think Rover would've designed it with more travel, especially as there tended to be more shorter people around back then! ;)

I'll do some investigating when I have the car, hopefully a couple of weeks or so!

The seat is adjustable for height, via spacers and longer bolts, which might help resolve your problem if nothing else works.
