Hi have just got a rover p6 k reg automatic 3500 v8. I have lost reverse gear but can move forward in all gears. I did remove the top of the gear shift to put in new surround would this have affected any thing. When it is in reverse position reverse lights are on. Any help or idars would be great many thanks Malc.

If you have only lost REVERSE, but still have all forward gears then it is a rear band problem. To confirm this you should also have lost engine braking in "1". You could check through the access hole in the tunnel to make sure that the band adjuster hasn't worked loose. Servo problems are common so I'd drop the sump to see if you can see anything. Servo faults can be fixed without removing the box, if it's the band itself then the box has to come out to replace it.

One extra cause can be that if you come to rest in "D" but you don't get the 2-1 downshift, then the car won't reverse.

Hi I am new to this could you tell me where the access hole is and how to adjust the band thanks Malc

Hi sorry it's Malc again not sure if I put my question in the right place just wondered if you could tell me where the access hole is and how to adjust the band thnks Malc

The access hole for the rear adjuster is on the RH side (driver's side RHD) of the transmission tunnel. IIRC you have to slide the seat all the way backwards then lift the tunnel carpet and foam and search for it.

It's rare for the adjuster to come loose, although I've seen it after other work has been done and the locknut has been left loose, and it's unlikely that it will be far enough out of adjustment to lose REVERSE if the band is in a serviceable condition. Normal problem is failure of the rear servo seal, or the servo body loose, cracked, or fallen off.....
