P6 electric conversion

Yes I would be very interested. There are a number of companies in Australia already doing this. Why Australians Are Converting Classic Holdens Into EVs. But according to this article it is very very expensive to get the regulatory approval. Over here to get a "HQ" Holden done, think of a larger FE Victor, is $60,000 or 30,000 GBP.
Ouch. This would have to be very much heart over head. However if it's a DIY job it may be cheaper. If it's your passion, give it a go.

Lewis
Out of morbid curiosity I asked one of these conversion specialists in South Australia. As it turned out he knew and loved the P6B and advised as a minimum $125k but likely closer to $150k.

I am 'down under' as mentioned above, and reliably informed that changing a gearbox requires an engineer to inspect and sign off. If you dont tell anybody I have an LT77, neither will I.
I put mine over the pits with a 5sp Supra Turbo box and didn't even get a mention. The likelihood of a Transport guy having any clue what's meant to be there is incredibly remote.

Thanks Mike. Seems to be gone. Discussion with the conversion people at the moment is focussed on lexus and leaf motors. The Lexus has an integrated 2 speed transmission which they tell me would combine with the rover diff to give a good final ratio for cruising. It might be too long for the transmission tunnel through.

Progress:
We have the power supply. It is the transmission from a Lexus hybrid GS450H. It is a bit bulky compared with other EV motors but 2 Electric motors and a 2 speed gearbox are incorporated into it. Measurements suggest it should fit mostly within the Rover’s transmission tunnel leaving the engine bay free for batteries and other gear. If it doesn’t fit there is a smaller option, the GS300H but there are no completed EV conversions around using the 300 motor, while there are a number of conversions driving around with the 450. Will likely shortening of the propellor shaft but everything from there back will remain standard.

Work is due to start in 6 weeks. I have been asked by the engineers working to confirm some data on the p6 (series 1 2000 automatic).
Official seating capacity - I think it’s 5
Gross Vehicle Weight - Automobile catalog.com says it’s 1628kg.
Can anyone confirm if these are correct?
Cheers,
Mark

my old handbook gives weight as 1255kg, 2767lb . I think 5 pax would be tight considering the centre of the rear seat area and the width of the tunnel.. Diff to gross weight being 370kg, that might be 4 x 90kg passengers?

Thanks,
Ideally I would get some official looking documentation to show the certifying engineer but looking through brochures and owners manuals only gives kerb weight.

Progress report:
Took it to Ash in Ballarat for some work on brakes, suspension and steering. Thanks for that tip pa747sp. Made a massive difference. It drives better than it has in 30 years.
Interior nearly done (doing it myself to save a few bucks). Still need to sort out carpet and furflex. We are heading back up to Sydney next week to start the conversion work. Probably take at least 6 months. Thanks to Demetris we now have official rover 2000 series 1 gvm of 1700kg which should be enough to accomodate Lexus gs450h motor plus batteries, driver and passenger(s).
Everything is to stay original from driveshaft back.
There will be some parts going cheap to good homes. I’ll advertise them in the NSW Rover club newsletter.

What a superb job you have done on the upholstery?

Thanks Mike,
I tend to stick to stuff like this rather than mechanical repairs. I learnt a lesson many years ago when I lost the brakes in my mini after adjusting them. They were never great but that time my foot went to the floor and nothing happened. Luckily it had a decent handbrake. Mechanic told me to stick to my day job. Now I have self adjusting power assisted discs.

re weight - official figure is 4 passengers and 5 gallons of fuel. Your weighbridge certificate comes in just about right....What gear were you in during the Dyno run? that torque figure is very high...?

Dyno was in first gear. The aim was to assess maximum torque the diff is seeing.
My weight of 1300kg was with 3/4 tank of fuel. Also 5L bottle of coolant in the boot. Still rear axle 60kg lighter than the front. When it’s converted half the batteries will be in the space left by the fuel tank. They predict it will have about equal weight front and back axles.

progress report:
I delivered the car to the EV conversion garage in Sydney this morning after driving up from Melbourne yesterday. We stopped in Tarcutta for a drink and to catch the last of the sunshine then decided to push on to Petersham so we weren’t driving through Sydney in the ‘cyclone bomb’ predicted by the bureau. 110kmh most of the way. A bit noisy but a smooth ride after getting new bushes and steering box adjusted in Ballarat last month.

Motor on its way to a new home! I’m told Harry is going to take it apart, fix it up, then look for a car to put it in. I’ll recommend the Rover forum to him.

Hi Mark, good to see your project coming along. Off point, I noticed in one of your previous posts that you had refurbished your seats and door cards ? I'm looking to vinyl spray paint my door cards to match the original sandalwood colour. I presume you did the same ? If so can I ask what colour code you have for the vinyl paint ? In Ballarat we only have one place that will mix vinyl auto paint, Haines paints.
