Hi, would be much appreciated if anyone has any good tips on undoing the crankshaft pulley on a V8 auto. Trying to take the front cover off and the pulley is really tightly done up and I can't get it undone.
Thank You

How brave are you?

Get an impact socket with a short enough extension that you can get a long strongarm or "T" bar at 90 degrees then place the end of the bar about 4 to 6 inches away from the inner wing/crossmember on the passenger (RHD) side then just give the starter motor a quick flick, as the engine rotates it will take the bar with it until the body stops it, so undoing the bolt.

Thanks for the quick response. I can see how that would work. If I wasn't that brave is their any other alternative.
Regards Steve

If not, remove the halfmoon cover plate on the front of the bellhousing and get someone to wedge a screwdriver in the ringgear while you try to undo the bolt.

Steve.
Never had this method fail to work for me in 30yrs!! :p
But make sure your battery is fully charged, and it will help if you remove the spark plugs," no compression to resist the starter spin". also, put a good wrap of rag around the wrench handle where it touches the bodywork, saves chipped paint :D

I would just like to say thank you very much for the advice. You guys are great I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I posted on here before re a gearbox problem and it is good to know there are people who can take the time out to assist. P6's rule!!
Thanks, Steve

Did we manage to sort that one as well?

I just put a breaker bar on and belt it with a hammer... i like my paintwork too much to start twatting it with a starter motor.

If the bolt is tight you can hit the bar as hard as you like, if you don't lock the engine it won't come undone. Using the starter to shock it undone the bar gets nowhere near any painted surfaces, it hits the undersealed surface at the top of the crossmember. (Chances are while you're trying to belt the bar with a hammer you'll miss and smash the paintwork anyway)

Depends how long your bar is...
Ive take to slipping a 3 foot length of steel tube over my breaker bar. Seems to do the trick.

Does anyone actually bother doing the nut up to the torque settings in the book? I just Do mine up "FT" and leave it at that.

Air-impact gun makes removing and tightening this sort of stuff a lot easier, the shocks usually release the bolts before the engine has chance to turn. Same goes for tightening. As you say though F tight will do. :)
