P6 Coupé.

Hi guys,

Found this photo…it was taken at the Chelsea Auto Legends Show on Sunday 5th September this year.

P6Coupe.jpg

Great-looking car IMHO.

Looks like a bit of a hotchpotch – Graber Coupé-style C-pillar; RHD with NADA scoops; no side trim (series 1?); series 2 grille, V8 valance etc.
Is this a known car, or any ideas?

Cheers,

Matt.

Strange, very similar to what Webmaster is building too.

Looks like either someone misplaced their gravy, or the coupe is purging its water in protest of something.

Very interesting, the other forum that it appears on claims it's some sort of prototype, anybody know any more ? Doesn't look like a Graber. Shame the picture isn't more side-on.

Heres the dvla bit!
n/a bits deleted!

The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for RVO 1 are:

Date of Liability 01 06 2011
Date of First Registration 26 04 1972
Year of Manufacture 1972
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1978CC
Fuel Type Petrol
Vehicle Colour RED

I've not seen that car before...maybe it'll pop up next year somewhere, doesn't look like a red 4-cylinder in the photo.
Cheers
Nick

I had a look to see if any more pictures and found this!

LMAO. Maybe the bonnet bling? I kinda like it tho!

Nice find, Aaron.

Cheers,

Matt.

By the look of it the B/C pillar is in the standard place as is the rear screen. So basically, rear doors welded shut and rear side window extended into the D post / rear 1/4 panel? Might be a bit of a fight to get in the back.

I'm not sure why, but the effect is a little boxy for me. Perhaps emphasises that the roof line needs to come down a tad at the back?

I thought the C piller looked different to normal. Hard to tell from that angle. I wonder how you get in the back.......

It does look better than the normal convertable hack jobs, but I would have thought by 1972 Rover were done with doing P6 prototypes. My bet is a 3rd party custom.

This is more than likely the ex-Jersey registered "Coupe" that was for sale a few years back now.

It was built by someone (a Rover garage) near Bristol and allegedly one of few (I have heard upto ten cars, but don't believe it.)

It was Monza Red (hence the DVLA info).

I have pictures of the car and the inside, currently not at home so can't scan and post.
I am sure I have posted about this car in the past.

It was a short feature in P6 News when I was editor
I have other pictures not published then.

The interior has been redone as well, it was buckskin I seem to remember.
The reg is a "pisstake" on ROV 1, a genuine prototype ( although the car now wearing that is debatable )

I will try to find the photos I have but no promises as I have thousands and a crap filing system.

Interesting comments Chris, to give you an idea, if they have basically just trimmed the upper D post, welded the rear door, and fitted a single piece glass, it would look like this side on.

Certainly not what I'd call a coupe, and doesn't really match what we see in these pictures, so they could have either moved the rear screen forward, or extended the front doors, or both.

If you extended the front door a few inches, you get this, which I think is much more acceptable.

Very difficult to tell from the angle the car was photographed, but I tried scaling the front door glass against the length of the 1/4 light, and I think I agree that the front door is extended. So the car would look like your second photoshop. That would also get the seat in the pictured position. I thought they were further forward at first, but popped out and had a look at Lucky! The overall effect is then quite pleasant, but it strikes me as being not being particularely better than the standard 4 door - certianly not good enough to justify the amount of work involved. I do like the 1/4 panel treatment though. Unsurprisingly that is very similar to the BMW 2000 CS coupes we've discussed before.

How to make it look really good? I think the roofline needs to come down around 1/2" at the back (and proportionally as you go forward). That would also drop the height of the B/C post above the waist just enough to be worthwhile. And I reckon the rear screen needs a tad more rake too. I'd still base it from the same position though - having the base directly over the centre of the rear wheels is definitely correct - bring it forward and the tail looks over long.

That rear screen really is the key to the whole look, isn't it!

Chris

Ok, I have been given a photo which is apparently the same car in an earlier guise, certainly the coupe mods look identical, also the colour and "2000" badge match the DVLA records for RVO1

I'm pretty sure I saw that coupe for sale in the back of practical classics 6 or 7 years ago, when it was red, and I think it claimed to be one of six or something. I'll see if I can find the ad sometime.

Nice work on the mock-ups, Richard. And thanks for posting pic of the car.

Seems like the car has had some serious treatment to get to its current spec. - new boot/BMS kit; complete retrim/recolour; respray; NADA scoops etc.

On inspection, the C pillars have differing geometry. But the colour and 2000 spec are as DVLA. Strange.

Cheers,

Matt.
