P6 Colours

Hi All,

I was wondering how many colours were the P6's available in when new?

Did the overseas markets have the same colours as the UK?

Cheers...John :)

Did the overseas markets have the same colours as the UK?

I'm not aware of any official lists of colours but there were certainly a few variations on NZ built cars. Series 2 cars in particular had the most colour changes.
I have seen a few cream ones (See my Estate pics), Wedgewood blue was available on later examples, there was Saffron (kind of mustard colour) and I have a friend with a pale green '73 V8. I also had a '69 SC a few years back that was dark brown.
The cars were built in the same factory as Triumphs, Jags and BMC stuff so I suspect that it was common practice to use paint from their ranges.

The VIP was supposedly done to use up leftover NADA base units. There were only 77 built and all were very highly specced, being fitted with side impact bars, air conditioning, PAS, tinted glass etc and all had SD1 type velour upholstery. Not all were silver, some were Brasilia brown. I believe that they were not really offered for sale to the general public either, just quietly sold to dealers and such. Certainly they were in part, a testing ground for some SD1 trim and paint technology.

I have a list of 41 different named colours for UK factory built cars.

The CKD's (assembled in South Africa and New Zealand), had local colours which were not all listed by the factory, so the range is greater than 41 in all.

Then there were also the ad-hoc colours which were requested individually by customers, which are specials and not recognised Rover colours.

My 1974 P6B is saffron and is one of only three that I have ever seen on Australian roads. I have seen numerous Triumph 2500s over the years in the same colour, so I am inclined to think that it was likely a Triumph colour that a few N.Z assembled Rovers just happened to receive.

As an aside,...Saffron is the world's most expensive spice, and the colour of the paint is a representation of the colour of the spice.

Colour was indeed one of the reasons I fell in love with the p6, dont see many safrons about even here in NZ but it is a georgous colour and suits the p6 better than the triumph.

Just wondering if any body can help, I repainted my seal covers black, but would like to put them back to the colour they were. I would like the name and colour code if possible .It came as a Huntsman package optional extra, thats all I know .
