P^ wayward steering

Hi,

Just bought my first Rover, P6 3500 Auto, although have had many other classics over the years and currently drive a Ford Zephyr 4 MKIII.

The steering on the P6 is a little vague on the open road but ok on bends etc, I've been told by the previous owner this is the steering box idler adjusting screw? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the tyre pressures are correct. There isn't an adjuster on the steering idler. There is an adjuster on the steering box, but you need to make sure there isn't any play in any of the steering and suspension joints before you adjust the box. So, there are top and bottom ball joints each side to check, a steering siderod with a ball joint at each end on both sides, and a track rod across the bulkhead with a track rod end at each end. After you've ascertained there is no play in any of those, check the Front Wheel Alignment. Once that is correct, you can adjust the steering box.

Don't forget to make sure that both the steering box and the idler are filled with oil as well, and the idler isn't loose on its mountings.

There's plenty to look for.

Harvey, you say to check the idler is full of oil. There is no mention in the workshop manual of how to do this or what oil it should be filled with. Is the nut on top of the idler the fill hole, and what goes in? Motor oil or gear oil?
Thanks
Roy

Remove the bolt from the top and dribble in EP90. It takes ages as the air has to bubble out. The chances are it will leak out through the bottom seal but you at least have a while using it lubricated.

MOT fail on Drag Link End Ball Joints, is this the side rod arm?

I'd guess so, as it's a common problem, but ideally I'd ask, as who knows what they're referring to with that description. The other alternative is the track rod ends, but they probably never even saw those....

It seems to me that drag links run fore & aft and tie rods across the car, which would make it the side rods I think. And as Harvey says they probably never even saw the track rod ends.

Vern
