Out and about in Derbyshire

Hi Peeps!
And welcome to my first posting on the p6roc forum.
In the last year or so, I have spotted several P6's out and about the Derbyshire area, some 4 pots, some V8's. So my next thought is--- anyone fancy meeting up for a run around the Peaks and Dales? I've just done a 100 mile round trip in the old V8 which took us over the cat and fiddle, through Goyt Valley, and along the A57 Snake Pass, and then started the journey home through lots of places ending in "Dale". It's certainly some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. I also know of an excellent country pub, that's close to the M1 if anyone fancies a coke or two!!!

Cheerio,

Yippee!!!!! Finally a break in the weather. Did Noah have to cope with this much rain?
As it's been a lovely evening, My wife and I have had a good run around the Dales, Covering about 40 miles. Went through the back roads to the lovely Carsington Resevoir, and then dropped down into Matlock Bath. Has anyone ever noticed how Matlock Bath is like a seaside town?
On our travels I spotted a really nice Saab 96, and an MGB. No P6's though!

You might see me out and about in my Yellow Estate with P5 Rostyles. Don't use it every day but can be seen blasting up and down the Chapel bypass and then up long hill to Buxton. Also occasional trips on the Cat and Fiddle.

We're off on a trip to Norfolk next week which will be our longest journey yet since restoration. Planning to accurately measure fuel consumption on my newly fitted digital bicycle speedo. Any guesses for a 3.9 with weber 500!

I know that road well! I'm often over that way. I love doing the Cat and Fiddle, apart from getting carved up by power rangers on bikes......

I also love going through Castleton, and then up through Winnets pass, not sure of the spelling on that one!

A 3.9 with a Weber 500? sounds interesting! I think on the MPG front you will either be really surprised, or really depressed :D

Ive got a 3.5 with Holley 390,Edelbrok manifold and its surprising what jeckel and hyde machines they are.Drive to the law and she returns 23-24 to the galleon.Boot her and she's like my ex wife, drains your pockets!!! :D.And whats with the powerranger thing.I prefer the term leathers on brain out.Strange that,in my P6's or my capri i'm Mr Nice Guy,leathers, lid and Ducati 999s,animal!!!

Sorry dude, no offence meant with the power ranger thing, just a generalisation really :)

I love driving over the Cat and Fiddle, but last month some loon on a bike must have missed the P6 by about half an inch, while showing off on a big bike. Some of the bikers around Derbyshire really have got a death wish. But then again, you do come across some that are really respectful too :)

Some of my best mates are bikers. I've just finished painting the tank off a 1950's BSA tonight :D

I'd agree they really do ride like absolute tits but they're only out in the summer. I like to take the Ariel Sq4 out on a nice crisp autumn day and have the road to myself without somebody demonstrating to me the surprising fact that 50 years of technological advance and 4 times the power means you can go faster!

Will report back on the MPG. I think the carb is pretty well set up throughout the range and with a 5 speed box i'm only just ticking over at 70mph. Is that holly equipped car a 4sp man or auto??

An Aerial sq4? cool :D My friend has a BSA B31, which I painted the tank on for him. Sadly he has to sell this one soon :( He also has a 1940's BSA Star Twin, thats a cool looking bike. Apparently it had a tree growing through the frame when he found it! He probably has enough stuff in his shed to build another two BSA's!

Hi BB.At the moment it has a 3 spd auto but i'm going to be fitting a 5 spd in the near future. Its fine at cruising speeds but anything over 100 mph its redlining!!Not good ???

OK that sounds promising, with a 5 speed it should give even better fuel economy.

Are you going the SD1 route for a 5 speed or are you interested in the Toyota Supra option? Has an even taller top gear than the SD1 but the down side is the conversion bellhousing is a little expensive. If you want more details let me know as i've carried out this conversion and can give you some hints and tips on where to get bits and how to get the clutch working so that you don't need both feet to push it down!

I'm going the SD1 route.Ive got the box and shorter propshaft, just got to get the adapter plate(so i believe).Oh and also a garage to do the job in.Ive got a very poorly S1 V8 in it at the moment. Its gone anorexix and thrown up all its oil over my driveway(mother not happy!!!)But you can give me the Supra option if thats ok :)

SD1 V8 boxes bolt straight up to the back of the block, providing you get the bellhousing with it.that's the expensive bit. later boxes run a taller 5th gear than early ones

Supra conversion bellhousing costs around £500 new and complete with clutch, Gearbox £100-£150 and modified prop £40. Only thing is the supplied slave is too small a bore so I used a modified MG midget cyliner to get it working properly.

You need to make a crossmember up but thats required with the SD1 box anyway.

If you get a garage to do the job ask questions or view a previous conversion. There are some horrible ones outthere where they simply bolt the crossmember through the floor pan. Someone on here might be able to recommend a firim/specialist to do it for you,

Just returned from my trip to Norfolk fuel economy wasn't bad at 25mpg!! Probably could have done better if I had been able to resist blatting it up to the redline in second and third every now and again, it's nice to surprise people when they think they are about to blast past you onto a dual carriage way!

Similar tale here. coming round the Norwich Ring-road in my S2 3500. some baseball capped "yoof" in a Vauxhall vectra pulled up next to me at the lights, stereo blasting out some "kickin' beat" (I know why they call it that too, when you hear the racket you want to give the pimply pillock a good kicking!)
Lights changed to amber, drop the Rover into D, foot down and away before he had even engaged first gear.
Love it!

Paul.

We can't do that in our V8 at the moment as the crossmember bushes are completely shot so you have to pull away all gentle like. At the moment she's the only car in the fleet on the road. :( The Oxford should be finished next week though & I'm farming the P4 out to have everything out at once so I should be able to get over to Richard at P6 spares soon where we're going to polybush the whole car, fit new springs & shocks & bolt the Holley which came out of the monster estate onto the engine. :) Then we can show the boy-racers a clean set of heels again.
