I'm stumped why put 20w50 in when it says on the car that you use s.a.e 10w30 new to this and confused

I can only think that's for use in very cold climates.

Would it damage my p6 if I put a classic 10w30 with the proper zinc and phosphorus

The Rover Workshop manual recommends SAE 20w, BP 10W-40, Castrol GTX, Duckhams Q20-50 and Regent Texaco 20/20Wamongst others so I would just put in whatever you prefer provided it has the magic ZDDP in it!! Oddly the workshop manual doesn't mention 10W30 even though it is stated on the under bonnet sticker!!!!

I know it's head wrecking,dunno what to do, although I did find out the owner before me apparently used 10w40 only found that out a few mins ago, maybe they ran out of stickers and slapped a foreign one on it ,rover rover rover dear o dear
