Oil Pressure

Hi, Looking at the marks to the top of the oil pump shaft and the roll pin in the bottom of the dist drive I would hazard a guess that the dist is not going down into the front cover far enough. It's engaging with the camshaft gear which is why it runs OK, but is not engaging with the oil pump shaft. They can be a bit fiddly sometimes, it happens to the best of us, try keep turning the pump shaft a little bit either way until it does go down properly. Can you take a picture of the base dist installed? Are you thinking that the dist shaft has moved up into the dist housing? If it had you probably wouldn't get the dist cap on.

Now we are getting down to brass tacks, I thought I was loosing the plot. But I do need measurements, I do have an end float though, but it is only about 25thou

Hi, I've just been out to the workshop and the only distributors I have loose are from SD1s and the measurement from the base of the dist where it goes into the front cover and the bottom of the gear is 100mm (sorry Harvey, just under 4"). The gear has a hollow section with the roll pin to engage with the slot in the top of the oil pump shaft. ( The SD1 dist has an adaptor that is held in by a roll pin to engage with the screwdriver type blade of the pump shaft. Which is irrelevant for our purposes here.). I'm still of the opinion that your dist is not going down far enough to engage with pump shaft. You have to have the pump shaft in the correct orientation to do that, so some adjustment of it is required. Plus, again can you take a pic of the dist in position in the front cover? So we can ascertain if whether it's that or not.

Not sure if this is worth anything... Measured an SD1 timing cover. From the face of the distributor hole to the top of the oil pump drive shaft (male tang!) is 110mm. Tang is ~10mm . If anybody knows the difference between the two types of drive shafts, or has put the two types of distributors side by side, it should be possible to get the point at which the early dizzy connects to the oil pump shaft.

I have again tried to explain that my problem lies in a measurement,, it seems the dizzy shaft, male, is not entering the female slot of the pump. Not long enough. I try to show in a pic.

If it did fit at one time, how exactly do you think it has managed to get too short?
 
It was probably fitted wrongly by a previous owner, as in my previous posts The bodges I have found on this car are uncalculatable, blimey where did that word come from.
I think maybe it was running on a friction drive, and giving some sort of pressure.
Not realizing I had a problem, I did not "look" at the dizzy shaft. I only removed the dizzy to work on other engine parts, so it went back as removed.
Getting back to measurements, I need to know, double urgent, Where in my photo I have the dizzy shaft at 3 7/8" Should it be 4" this would bring it level with the base of the dizzy. and would slot into the pump slot perfect (I think)
So, anyone out there with a dizzy out of the car, how far is the dizzy drive from the distributer mating face, if you make it 4" you are in for a brownie point

I don't think so, the one I have here is 3 7/8" and the oil pump drive tang doesn't come all the way to the bottom of the gear.

If it should be 3 7/8" why is it not entering the key on my pump shaft to drive the pump.
Surely the pump drive could not have worked its way down a bit. Stupid statement? Not having worked on a P6 pump before, I do not have any insight
Going back to the pump shaft slot, from the dizzy seat on the block, to the pump slot, two measurements? top of pump shaft and bottom of slot where dizzy tang fits.
Are we getting anywhere? because the local fish and chip shop may find the dizzy in the fish fryer soon

I have a Bosch unit out of a P6B handy. From mounting face of dizzy body to end of shaft is 100mm (3-15/16"), but the male tang that engages the pump shaft is recessed 9mm (3/8") inside that. The tang appears to be 7.5mm long.
 
looks like the end of this chapter, local mechanic had a dizzy filed away in case off, inserted in 666, bingo, started with oil pressure, (will have to sort out rewards) warning light not going out though, another under the car job, to sort out switch
