Oil Pressure

I cannot find any reference to the oil pressure gauge switch (the larger switch on the pump) in the wiring diagrams. Where does the wire go to?

It's 109 on my wiring diagram, is called "Oil pressure transmitter" and goes to the oil pressure gauge at 92.

I can see the gears, and also a drive peg, this I turned 180 degrees with a screwdriver, hardly any resistance, turned back to original position. Should there have been oil in sight, because there was not. So??

I have my front cover off at the moment, so this is the inside of the cover with the dizzy and oil pump in situ. The drive with the bolt through it the end of the cam, which drives the dizzy as you say, and you can see the drive shaft for the oil pump coming up from below and engaging onto the bottom of the dizzy.

The above being SD1 is slightly different to P6B in that the distributor shaft itself drives the oil pump gear in the P6B. P6B oil pump shaft is female (as standard) SD1 is male and has the wobbly drive on the dizzy as shown above.

If everything looks like is should in there, the next thing to try is to get a something to fit into the oil pump drive that you can put into a battery drill, and spin the oil pump. It does sound possible that the oil has somehow drained out and it needs priming.

It should spin fairly easily to start but you should then feel a pressure (hear a change in the drill sound) when it grabs the oil. Check the gauge is showing pressure, then back in with the dizzy and off for a drive :)

funny you had that thought, I was going to post that I have had the front wheels off the ground for a while, and as my run-up sloops down as well, would the oil have drained from the pump.? If I tried adding a drop of oil to the pump would this cause overflow in the sump?
I now have to make up some sort of drive for the drill, so watch this space

There is a photo of a homemade pump priming tool on this thread. Forum member Vaultsman hasn't posted much recently, which is a pity, I always enjoyed his informative how-to write ups and photos.

erm.. not quite sure how to start with that. How are you going to add a drop of oil to the pump?

Having removed the dizzy, I can see the oil pump drive, and gears, so why adding a small amount of oil through there not possible?
Having found a piece of I 1/2" brass, 2" long, I put a 0.250inch hole down the centre, found an old screwdriver with appropriate blade, scraped the handle, just the job, turned down the brass half way to
1 1/4"to fit in the place of the dizzy. wait for it! 20lb pressure on the gauge, excited, no, assembled all, fired up, no bloody pressure on the gauge, oil light still on. (no drive?)
Going back to when I removed the dizzy, looking up to the drive, the blade/locator looked as though it had been scrapping the drive? and not locating?
Silly question, could the tip of the dizzy drive have sheared off?

Your oil pump gears are down at the bottom right hand corner of the picture below. As H says, if you can see them through the dizzy hole, you have a problem.

I am going to need you to take some pictures for me :hmm:

1/. Down into the dizzy hole

2/. Up into the end of the drive at the base of the dizzy

3/. Of the base of the dizzy with it in place

Firstly, what I assumed were the pump gears (allowing for the old peepers going downhill fast), are of course the cam gear. I have taken some photos, but do not know how to send
On looking into the bottom of the dizzy, the drive looks very scored, and I make it .125thou below the bottom of the dizzy housing, Overall I make the dizzy 4" Blade one eighth shorter, should this be level?
My rough calculations are that the drive is rubbing on top of the slotted shaft
So if the engine runs, the dizzy is OK, a reading on the gauge when the pump is turned by drill, it can only be the drive surely
Now got a non windup phone that takes pics, so how do I transfer, and to whooooom
The men in white suits are still banging on my door, catch up when they let me out

Hi, to add pics, in the reply box click the 'attach files' button, the resulting window will allow you to find the pics on you computer, click on the pic you want and click open. Then choose thumbnail or full image, do this for each pic you want. Then add any text before, after or in between them.

hope you get it sorted. sounds as though most likely is a failed pressure relief valve or jammed open? pump itself is possible to fail but unlikely. as to gremlins in a P6 .ever since I got mine its been a pit for money, parts and time. Wife and sons want it gone.. being a stubborn old Basta** I ket trying. currently apart from leaks ( ongoing) all over and starting .running issues most have been overcome with exception of the annual handbrake failure... but thats another story. in my 70's now and getting less able (and keen) to crawl under cars and skin knuckles etc its pure stubbornness that keeps me battling its foibles . most (with exception handbrake) I have overcome. cutting out was an issue for months but now cured. had stuck brakes. wiper issues. radio now packed up :( over heating etc so your not alone. do let us know how and if? we get issue solved.

I was in my 70s once, is it possible we may have a cloned car? maybe two cars can have 666 number plates.
Still cannot work out this bloody photo thing, My new phone/camera/floor sweeper/jack of all trades device, has managed to take some pictures but, I cannot get them transferred on to my laptop
So, back to basics,
Car starts, no oil pressure, but dizzy obviously turning.
Remove dizzy, turn pump drive by battery attachment, 20lbs on gauge
I make that a drive failure, between the dizzy and the slotted pump drive
I need a drawing ("perleese") to scale of the bottom of the dizzy, side view, with a cut-out view of the pump drive, This I hope will tell me if the dizzy drive has sheared, and if so is it replaceable, or "gulp" a new dizzy needed.
So onwards and upwards, I must get the new phone thingy out of the waste bin, before the wife throws it away
Keep well
Brian

There are only two possibilities in my mind.

1/. You haven't pushed the dizzy fully home and it's only just picking up the drive from the cam, but not pushed far enough down to engage into the oil pump. Hence why I asked for a picture of the base of the dizzy with it in place.

2/. Or possibly, you are actually the reincarnation of Jeremy Beadle :). I'm just expecting the cheeky chappie to jump out of a hedge any minute now.

Either way, you really cannot get any further with this without some sort of picture. Is there no one who can help with getting a couple of pictures onto the forum?

where do you live, I know a couple of Jerrys.
dizzy was always located correctly, and clamped
so, had a visit from my daughter, mothers day, she sorted my problem I hope, no not the car, nearly swore then, so here goes with the pictures
whoo a browny point
any help?

The pictures are a bit fuzzy Brian, but that drive does look a bit mangled.

How good are you at fixing engines?

Only 65years, give or take, 45y a maintenance fitter turner, retired 2000 at 63, with cars and maybe girls as my only hobbies, you would not like to give me a pound for every hour I have spent working on cars, maybe a few quid on girls.
Any ghost writer out there, I may write an auto biography, called me and my shadow, by Eanid Briton (get it?)
Return to, Do I purchase another dizzy or try to build up the drive on the shaft, to this I need measurement of exact length of shaft?
So now, all who are coming to the rescue of an old decrepit ex national service, Brad Pitt stand in, veteran of many NAFFi battles for tea and cake. Please que up outside my garage wearing a mask, I can supply tools and coffee.
This will be my last classic, so I am not giving up on it being roadworthy.
Typing finger now getting tired, so
All the best
Brian

I digress,
Sorry about the photo images, but I sold my Brownie a few years ago, now that was a camera, wind it up and away you go.
Back to the dizzy, I think we may agree, a new drive shaft needed, are they available? If the dodge one can be built up, I need a measurement from end to end, or from the bottom of the plate to the drive tip
