Oil leak from diff - help!

I'm currently sorting the rear brakes (failed MOT) and have found that the diff is now leaking from the nearside shaft and covering the disc in oil.

I assume a seal has gone but before I attack it, does anyone know if I'll need any special tools to do this?

I had this problem too at one time and started thinking about seals.......but before you do, be aware there is an air breather hole in the center of the axle shaft. This is how the diff breaths when it gets hot. An over full differential will spill oil out of this hole and you will think it is a seal.
I corrected the oil level, cleaned up the disk and no more problems.

Robin,
I did this job on my 1970 2000 TC.
1. Remove halfshaft and brake disk
2. Remove the brake caliper on the affected side.
3. Unbolt the driveshaft and the caliper carrier from the final drive.
4. The driveshaft can be pulled out.
Here's the problem:
The oil seal is close to the driveshaft flange. The bad news is that there is a "Thrust Collar" holding it on. The collar has to be pulled off with an umpteen ton press, the specialized Rover Churchill tool, or cutoff with an angle grinder without damaging the actual driveshaft. This is not for the faint hearted amateur.
Once you have the thrust collar off, you replace the oil seal, and then obtain a new Thrust Collar and have it pressed on with that umpteen ton press.
Oh, .... there is a large diameter but thin rubber "O" ring required as you reassemble the driveshaft onto the final drive.

I had to take the driveshaft to a British car mechanic for his man to remove and refit the collar and oil seal with his umpteen ton press.

For your amusement, I have pictures of an original collar (which I had fitted) and an engineering drawing of what a person would have to machine to make a collar if you can't buy one.
You can find the pictures on the club website:

Best wishes,
Eric (from the colonies)

All of the above is even more reason to make sure it is not just oil coming from the breather hole !!

Thanks guys, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for excess oil in the diff but I've got a feeling that I'll be needing the services of a local specialist, from what you've said Eric, it sounds like it's a bit beyond me.

Thanks again for your detailed help on this.
