Oil in steering damper

I just topped mine up through the small hole using a syringe - easy as. Some viscous fan couplings can also be refilled with silicon fluid - also use a syringe there before you lose your mind. You can buy the silicon from Toyota dealers in 2 different viscosities for exactly this purpose.
 
What’s the reason for the workshop manual saying the relay shouldn’t be dismantled?

This video shows there’s nothing too complex inside, although maybe not a lot in there to replace either. Maybe they were just sealed for life for the lifespan Rover were interested in the cars? Like a modern auto box.

I should top mine up. What was the agreed oil in the end, EP90?
 
I used EP90 also. That and thoroughly cleaning the valves in the top plate made for a huge difference in how the steering feels.

Simply that it's meant to be a sealed unit and replaced as a unit when faulty. An early example of the trend towards the practice.
