Oil change question

Very simple question:

Has anyone worked out how to take off the oil filter without it leaking everywhere?

To be honest it may be a NADA model issue with the filter being stuck below the two brake servos so it’s impossible to turn it upside down upon removal.

On a 4-pot? Never had a problem.. take it off, and quickly turn it upside down.

Then again, I also use the larger oil filters, not the half height ones.. if that makes a difference.

See my last sentence about no room to turn over as its stuck down between the two servos on the NADA engine bay. Also use the full size filters. By the time you've loosened and negotiated the dipstick, both servos, and associated pipework its already in full flow. (see attached pic)

My apologies. I keep forgetting about the dual system.

Is it possible to fit a remote system for the oil filter? Maybe mount it down by the radiator?

Wrap it in a rag or two whilst wiggling it past all the obstacles? I've never wrenched on a four pot P6, but I can see from the pic there can't be much room with all that brake hardware in the way! Or how about wrapping it in a plastic bag or two in situ, then doing the wiggly stuff? Just thinking aloud, so to speak. Write. Whatever. Sorry.

Has the engine run recently before attempting an oil and filter change?
In my case, normally it has stood for a while (engine cold) so what was about to drain from the filter has already drained to the sump. Also by using anti drain filters (that were designed to stand upside down like this) i find that when removed, the filters are more than half full, but you cannot empty them. What little oil drip i get is from the filter housing, something that a strategically placed small rag can take care off.

Actually, that's a very good idea. I've been thinking of adding an oil cooler (my car is a S1.5 and ex AC so no oil cooler), It might make sense to do both at the same time.

I tend to do the changes on a warm engine so as to get the oil out fairly well. It also ensures any carbon in the oil is in suspension and not settled at the bottom of the sump.

Its super slippery when you start pulling it out, not really enough room for rags plus the filter to get it past stuff. I normally stuff rags below it to catch as much as possible when I pull it up, but as @Demetris said when warm the filter is pretty full still.

I have the hoses for an integral oilcooler with the older style rad. Planning to use a more modern cooler and use the ends on modern hoses. The old hoses tend to weep with age. It would make sense with the remote filter, same unions on cooler and remote.

I've never had a particular problem as long as the filter has both the anti drain flap & the standpipe. Maybe you've been using filter without the standpipe?
