OCC 469 - restoring & running a "sharkstooth" 2000

This really is a great thread Phil. I'm learning so much about early cars from this. That rear brake pad contact is fantastic - and solid drive shafts - well I never!

Thanks Dave!

Just a few other differences - I don't know when these changed particularly.

No lock for fuel cap:

I could have got a shiny new one, but the tab would have a lock-slot in it!

Also, the door hinge pins need an Allen Key rather than a spanner!

And there's no hook for the (optional) seat belts:

:):)

I don't think those door hinge pins are original. Earlier cars have a different pin, but I don't think it's that.

I need to go down to the lockup and check what the early car has, but the April and December 64 cars certainly don't have that setup.

Interesting Chris. All the doors have these both top & bottom & I'm pretty sure the doors are the originals as they had 'Cataloy' filler or similar in them before 1978 (when it came off the road) so no apparent major restoration etc. The fronts have the round quarter light catch fixings & round door locks.

They are unlikely to have been taken off the car before my ownership. It's an April '64 car.

Not the greatest of pictures, but I stand corrected.

So there are now three types of hinge pin that I'm aware of. This is a March 64 car.

My April 64 and Dec 64 cars have a different pin to what you'd find on the later cars..

.... the repair had badly distorted the bonnet on one side but I've just about got it sorted now

To be fair to my aluminium-welder friend, looking at the 'as found' photo in more detail, the mirror had been bent down, in turn distorting the bonnet, so I stand corrected ;)

I've noticed for a long time that one of the light switches in OCC is almost translucent, whilst the others aren't:

I wonder if it's a replacement from another car - P5 perhaps?

I can't remember posting pictures of the early fan/heater controls before, so here goes:

Also, I think the beam stalk has a different end to later cars:

I've now taken the bonnet off the car & finished stripping the paint from it. I'm just doing a bit more remedial work & hope to spray it in the next few weeks.

Whilst there is evidence of a poor respray all over the car & under the bonnet, it does appear that the underside bracing was originally black. Where the rivets are still clean, it doesn't look to have been touched:

IMG_7735.JPG

In the absence of anyone knowing differently, I'll repaint these black before I do the colour on the top.

Does anyone know where I can get similar sound-deadening to this? It's about 1 inch thick & has a dark/black surface (unless that's just age & muck!) :hmm:

Phil,

The translucent switches are very early. I have a couple.

As for the sound deadening; I have some NOS in the garage that I need to sort out. I may have some spares.

That would be great Chris, if we could sort something out. I only really need the 'side' pieces; the front & rear could be re-used.

Can you put a close up of how the bonnet stay rod attaches at the front and how it clips to close bonnet. Mine has been bodged and have no idea how it should be. Thanks

This is how it should be (I think...):

There's a pretty unique spring washer which is almost like 2 washers together, then a normal washer & a split pin.
At the other end, again a fixing I've not seen elsewhere - a peculiar rubber fitting made specifically for the bracket I expect:

IMG_7987.JPG

That washer in the top pic is known as a Thackery washer. Often they are seen when bolting up sidedraught Webers onto a manifold to allow some flex to combat fuel frothing.

I've now got round to spraying the bonnet - let me show you my bespoke spray booth......;):

IMG_7902.JPG

I didn't get the paint / air mix right on this so got 'orange peel' as a result:

IMG_7903.JPG

That's curable by flatting it, but this isn't.....

IMG_7909.JPG

Not a great match . I'd ordered some more paint as the last lot I used was over 5 years ago. I'd used the same genuine touch up colour to match it to the previous paint but it's gone wrong somewhere. In some lights it looks almost passable:

IMG_7914.JPG

Anyway, there were a few areas I'd not prepped particularly well, so I've decided to do it again. I mixed 1/2 & 1/2 old & new paint but it still doesn't look right:

IMG_7978.JPG

Which leaves me the decision as to whether to carry on with the old paint - I have about 2/3rds of a 5 litre tin left & still the bonnet, doors & boot to do - or to mix some new with it so I have enough - or to try & get some more matched..... :hmm:

Where are you getting your paint from? I'm having a hard time getting anyone to provide paint matching.. or original colours.

regarding paint: I've mentioned this before on another thread but I think it's worth repeating; Martin Brown Paints of Blackpool have a good range of classic paints. They supplied me with an outstanding match to original, far better than my local paint shop and at about the same price.

Phil, not that I'm a car painter, but I wouldn't have thought you have enough of that colour to be able to do the panels you want to do. It isn't the colour you want anyway, so maybe leave it in the shed? Get a reputable and recommended paint factor to mix you enough to do all the panels you want, and many more besides? Then again, if as you say the paint changes colour in the tin with age... I dunno. That was another helpful ha'penny worth from me – not! Good luck!

I get it from 'Westoby's' in Hull, Chris.

I've now resprayed the bonnet with the 'old' paint. I got this finish straight out of the 'gun which is much better than the first attempt:

IMG_8002.JPG

This has far less of an orange peel look. I had read up on spraying a bit more & turned up the air pressure to around 2.5 bar, rather than the 1.8 bar that the spray gun instructions suggest. This atomises the paint much better. I am also using a mix of around 1 part paint to 2 parts thinners. You can see in the picture that my outside spraying tends to attract the bugs & these have to be flatted out.

I have now cut the paint back with 2000 wet or dry plus Farecla G3, T-Cut & Polish:

IMG_8052.JPG

It's not perfect by any means with a few marks & dinks that I didn't notice until it was too late, but I'm very glad that I've had a go.

IMG_8049edit.jpg

From this angle it looks finished, but there are still the doors & boot to do. Maybe next year now....;)

I've just booked mine in to be done over winter in 2 pack and when I asked him about colour match (not so critical when you're doing the whole car) he said "We find a good area on the panel, give it a really good polish and then take a high res pic whic we forward to the paint supplier, never had a problem" :hmm:
