Non functional rear calipers

Hello everyone.

I currently have my p6 with girling Calipers on wheel ramps looking at them. My hand brake engages the mechasim on the calipers, but doesn't stop the car. I don't seem to be getting movement nor wear on the discs. The pads have plenty of meat left. And the brake pedal has very little travel. I have attached some pictures link to my post on p6 help and tips . Can anyone offer some advice on freeing them up?

Hi Brendan,

It sounds like the seal has failed on the small piston within the calipers.

The refurb kits are only about £15 a side, but of course need fitting. A very satisfying procedure if you’re minded that way & have some basic facilities.

There are plenty of threads on here about this - I’ve posted recently myself.

Have you just acquired the car ? It looks like it has been stood for a long time.
Although the caliper's are not leaking you will need to remove both of them and either rebuild them, or exchange for rebuilt.
The discs will also need removal to be either re faced or replaced. I would replace those pads as well.

Whilst you are there change out the two flexible hoses.

If you want a better idea of what's happening I'd remove the discs, disconnect the handbrake linkage at the calipers, and manually operate the handbrake quadrants to see whether either of the calipers are adjusting up. As it looks as though things haven't been working for a while the chances are you'll end up removing and overhauling/replacing the calipers and with the discs and handbrake clevis pins removed you're half way to removal already. Prise the caliper dustcover back a bit with a screwdriver to see if the caliper is leaking internally.

Have some container handy as the dust cover (the metal 'dome' over the inner workings) may well be full of brake fluid - which it shouldn't be!

The covers do have 2 nuts holding them on, so don't prise too hard!

It's worth reading this thread, too Rear Brake Calipers Removal and some pictures at my 2 April 2018 post at Bop-Bop-Bop...

I have good news everyone. But thank you for all of the very informative comments. I pulled the calipers and rotors. The left side was locked up and I was able to fanangle the pistons loose but have to unlock the stuck e brake rod on the left caliper. The right side was much easier to get freed up though. I seem to be making progress!
