Noisey

Hi to all
can any one tell me why my power steering pump on m 3500S is so Noisey?
I’ve rebuilt it with new seals and bearing.
it was leaking not any more , I’ve bled it several times its a bit better but the noise returns.
it’s a sort f grate whining noise if that helps
TIA Paul

Hi, That's air cavitation in the fluid. Check or change the filter in the reservoir, Check or change the hose from the reservoir to the pump it may have collapsed internally. Because of the location of the steering box right up against the bulkhead they can appear noisy compared to lesser cars.

Hi Colin
thanks I have changed the filter, one of the previous owners moved the resovoir to the front
im wondering if the hoses are correct

Hi Paul,

I would advise returning the reservoir to where it should be, along with the correct length hoses.

Hose placement is critical to noise control on the P6 power steering system. The hoses need to be arranged so they don't touch the body, especiarly the metal components on the hose (particularly the high pressure hose which goes up over the back of the waterpump then down under the alternator then around and down the inner guard being held up there by sitting on the wiring and anything else soft).

Moving the tank probably means the low pressure feed line from reservoir to pump has been shortened. Standard layout has a long hose that goes from tank across the back of engine down the PS side guard then across the front lower valance and into the pump ie. it goes around three sides of the engine bay. It's very long and is intended to cool the oil as it passes across the radiator bottom.

The pumps can get very noisy if there is any restriction in the supply hose from the tank - cavitation as mentioned above. I suggest you replace that hose first, after putting the tank back in its original location. I once accidentally partly squashed the supply hose on a Disco, and the pump noise was dreadful.

Mine does this a bit and it is a properly rebuilt and bled system with new pipes, filter, rebuilt pump and box. I have just decided some are noisy and some aren't. It has been like it for 12 years so it must be OK!!

That’s really helpful the hose for return is short i think the high pressure is okay
ill check out the original route for both hoses
then decide which route to take
thanks for all the advice

Just picking up on this thread.
I replaced all the drive belts that came off the main pulley when I had to attend to the waterpump.
These belts included my P/steer .
Ive now noticed the p/s is noisey on initial start up. The oil is looking like its been through a blender -ie aeriated. and a load of oil is being dumped through the reservoir air vent.
Ive obviously disturbed the system when changing the P/s belt.
Any clues? before I get oil all over myself trying to find the cause.

Hi Gerald,

Changing the belt in itself won't deliver outcomes that you're now reporting, not unless the old belt was so loose and now an adjusted belt is revealing another problem.

Oil being dumped is normally because your filter is either blocked or you have too much oil in the system. When did you change the filter last? When you wipe the dip stick, screw the cap back on, then remove, where is the level in relation to the mark?

Hi Ron
Well Im definitely getting P/s oil on me and the driveway already!!.
Im pretty good at maintaining the correct oil levels , so don't suspect its that. Besides I reinstated the lost oil to the correct level and its dumped it again. The oil left in the reservoir is aeriated .
Interestingly the HP lines to and from the pump and reservoir are all secured with jubilee clips. Surprising they've never blown off.
Anyway Im going to replace both the feed and return hoses as a matter of course. They may have collapsed internally.
Talking about a blocked filter -Cant remember when I last replaced it. Any idea where to get one of these as there is no ID marks on it? Looks like something I used on my Massey Furguson 35 tractor way back in the day.
I guess a trip to REPCO and see if they can do a filter match.
regards
Gerald

From what you have said Gerald, I am placing my money on the filter being blocked. When my Rover's filter blocked, it dumped fluid everywhere. Changed the filter and all good again.

I think you will be very lucky to find one from Repco, but no harm in trying. I bought a genuine item years ago that came in a Land Rover box, dear as poison.
Having said that, I see that Mark Gray has them for sale, very reasonable price too.

OK all sorted.
I visited my local vintage car club. Often businesses offload their surplus or obsolete stock on these guys in lieu of landfilling.
Needless to say I picked up a NOS filter for a gold coin donation.
Fresh feed line from the reservoir to the steer housing. New filter. Fresh oil.
Never felt the power steering so smooth and quite, or I had forgotten over time.
First time I have changed the filter in 30yrs- [I know - I'm an idiot]. Apparently the paper innards in the filter degrade over time - poss. 29yrs.
Thanks for all your valuable input guys
