I went to start it up (69 2000TC)first time this year and it ....wouldn't hardly turn over.......new plugs and points and condensor ....its really hard to turn over.....even with 2 batteries ....i checked the compression....all even and good......cleaned the contacts on the solenoid and starter...cleaned the ground cable on battery.........put the old points and condensor back just in case....it drains the battery a fair bit trying.....i'm thinking a bad ground somewhere but i'm an electrical idiot......any ideas

Hi,

Is yours an inertia starter? I found that my 68 TC was slow to turn over because the screws that pass through the length of the body were very loose. They must have been that way for a long time. The flange was very well secured to the bell housing plate but you could grab the body of the starter and rotate it a good 10-15 degrees! Once I tightened the two screws from the end of the starter it made the world of difference. Just a thought.

The other possibilities are:

[1] Bad ground/earth strap (check for condition, corrosion, loose fittings etc) (test by clipping a jump lead from the - terminal of battery to a good earth point on the engine)

{2} Worn bushing in starter motor causing extra drag. (you may have to remove the starter to check it's condition)

[3] Loose connection of positive strap to back of starter. Check tightness of terminal nuts, Test by running a jumper lead from the + terminal of the battery to the terminal post on the back of the starter.

Hope that helps,

Steven
