nice little earner

It's a late one, isn't it?

I'm always a bit suspicious when people sell on cars so quickly. Either they're Del Boy characters or there's something seriously awry with it. Then again, the car could genuinely have turned out not to be what the owner was expecting. Quite a few people I know who lusted after the kudos of a classic were very quickly disenchanted by the reality! It's why the turnover rate of Mark 2 jags is so ridiculously high. City types buy them as a fashion accessory to prove their quirky eccentricities, but quickly realise that the real quirks translate as shocking ergonomics, and the eccentricities are 1st and reverse being separated by a hair's breadth. Needless to say, they're sold on to the next unsuspected customer for a profit.

If a car is shiney like the seller's suit, don't buy it.
If it's grimey and bit chipped like their fingernails, get your wallet out!

I've noticed there's usually at least one of the former an unfortunate precession of the latter on most car forums on the n net.
I have no problem with this these days, people gotta earn a crust...... But it riles me when someone begs that they need an xyz for their newly aquired project, someone then sells them their spare and suddenly the beloved project appears for sale 'with new xyz'...... Just seems a little 'cad' like  or is it just me?

It is a difficult one, part of me gets irritated at a circa £2000 profit for driving it 30 miles and sticking it in Autotrader but yes I realise it’s a business and has overheads etc etc.
Lets face it anyone with internet access and, ideally, a digital camera can sell a classic car these days. Ebay, Car & Classic the main avenues IMHO with numerous also rans, but when it comes to dealers who is buying them?

I can only assume it is psychological, a perception that a private seller is more likely to be “tucking you up” whilst a dealer is upright and honourable and of course you’ll have lots of consumer legislation to back you up should things go wrong. Though a recent high profile case (see this weeks Classic Car Weekly for the FULL story ) does rather give a lie to this.

I’m not fully conversant with the facts but as I understand it a women bought a 1930’s Bentley which she though was an original Speed Six, paying a whopping £95,000  ….some time later she finds it wasn’t a Speed Six, thus worth a lot less and not what she wanted so she tried to back the car and when they said no she sued the dealer. She won at the County Court but lost when they appealed to the High Court the judges ruling it was her responsibility to check the car thoroughly to make sure it was genuine, the dealer blurb I believe did not categorically state it was a Speed Six but I think may have give the general impression and implied it was.

Caveat Emptor may only be two words but they carry so much wisdom. :| :| :|

the bentley dealer is stanley mann and would i guess be expert in vintage bentleys , he sold a car for £425,000 to a lady american attorney , he said that he explained at the time of purchase that the engine was not original but built to speed six spec , she sued because she received a valuation below what she had paid and wanted money back , the story i read in octane, she won at first but then the decision was overturned , the car was sold in 2007 ,i wonder what the lawyers made out of it,i wonder if i can get money back because my house isnt worth what it was 5 years ago!rich

And of course even if you win at Court , you still have to get the money from the losing party .
Normally they use every possible way to avoid paying up

"Mr Mann has now made a tidy profit from the Bentley in question.
After buying the car back from Fortis for £425,000, he carried out further work on the 80-year-old car and sold it for a staggering £675,000."

Looks like Bonhams should get their valuation wallah replaced, toot suite!
