Hi, all, I've a query re the new rules. MOT expired on the 15th, tax is due 1st August, already registered as Historic, not had MOT done due to holidays. Am I ok to use it before I take it for test?

All P6's should be MOT exempt, so you won't need to MOT it to Tax it, so I don't see that there's any need to worry about getting the MOT done, even if you decide to have a voluntary MOT you can have it done later.

I'd advise you to check on the DVLA website just to confirm that, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

I understand from the FBHVC that the DVSA will list all vehicles over 40 years old as a VHI and thus MoT exempt ( which includes yours) but when taxing next time you will need to declare VHI to keep the exemption. Following discussion with a representative of DVSA, a process has been identified whereby the keepers of vehicles qualifying as VHIs, who are under the law entitled to be exempt, will not be obliged to take what would legally be a voluntary MOT test just to escape possible enforcement based upon the DVLA record. • The DVLA record currently shows every pre-1960 vehicle as being exempt from the MOT. • The DVLA record will pick up, by reference to the date of first registration, when any vehicle which might qualify (i.e. not an HGV or a bus or coach in commercial use) becomes over 40 years old. • The record will then show that vehicle as MOT exempt. • If at the time of next licence renewal a declaration as a VHI is not made, the requirement for an MOT will reappear on the DVLA record. • The DVLA record is and will continue to be updated bi-monthly to the police. • The police will therefore treat every vehicle over forty years old as MOT exempt unless and until the record shows it is NOT exempt.
It would be interesting if you look up your vehicle on https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ViewVehicle to see its status.

So, checking on the .GOV website shows status as "tax due 01 August 2018" and "MOT No results returned". Interestingly both of the boxes are coloured blue, from memory if one or the other was expired it showed as red (?) I think. I feel sure yourself and Harvey are correct, I'd be very surprised if the Police had a problem, if you could find one first of course.....

I think the box turns blue as one renewal which will be for the MOT status as well, you will either MOT it or declare VHI for when you renew the Tax. I have just checked my P6 which is SORN and both boxes came back in green with the MOT box "No results returned"
