New jack

Well, was going to do a pre MOT check and service on the old girl but my long serving jack (20 years+) died, and I killed it a bit more trying to fill it up with jack oil. So I've brought a new one.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liftmaster-High ... B003O897TA

I'll let you know how it preforms, was the highest lift I could find without paying silly money and @ £50 inc postage I can't argue. :)

I have the 21" lift jack from the same company - it's brilliant :D

The great thing about it, is the very fast lift on no load, i.e. when you slide it under the car one pump and it will be in contact to start lifting.

I find it very useful

Mmmm, came today. A bit smaller than I expected. I'll take a photo next to the old jack at the weekend. But for £50 all in it'll work well as a little backup / helper jack. Just have to get the credit card out and get a proper mans jack. ;)

My old one looks just like this one, but the label has rubbed off so I can't order new bits. Been on their website and looks like even if I did know the exact model they don't sell repair kits.

I got the high lift one from halfrauds. Reduced from £79.99 to 39.99. was a few months back so might be normal price again by now but could be worth a look...

I did the same, Halfords hlaf price sale, big solid high lift thing it is but very stiff action as its a quick lift so its tricky to push the handle in a tight spot

I got the Halfords 2.5 ton 4x4 high lift jack like alfesti and rockdemon in the sale. Very good jack and also lifts high enough (just, with a couple of big blocks of wood :D ) to get ramps under the back wheels.

The quick lift thing can be a bit of a pain at times when trying to position it in the right place but you get used to it.

Had a look, they are @ £99 now.

Here is the comparison between the new 'cheap' jack and my 20 year old expensive jack. Can't remember the price of the old one, but was over £100 as I remember pushing my self to get it. Has been a very good jack, sad to see it broken.

Having said that the new one is very usable.

With the top bit screwed all the way out it gives the same hight as the old one, 51cm. With it wound all the way in it gives 46cm lift. It work so well and proved to be more stable than I expected I think it'll do me for a while now until I can afford one with the kind of height I really want. The old one would give just enough lift to get the rear wheels on ramps. Would prefer a bit more for when i'm welding.

I bought a new jack at the weekend, from machine mart, usual clarke stuff, well designed with stupidly poorly thought out features. its got a 'quick lift' pedal which stops you putting the jack far enough underneath as it catches on the valance of the car! otherwise it is ok, atleast its better than the cheap £20 one ive got by with upto now!

Hi Richard,

If your old jack is a Clarke one, you can get spares, manuals and tech support here...

http://www.clarkeservice.co.uk/

How long they support their products for I'm not sure, although a chap at work managed to get some spares OK for an old chainsaw.

Cheers,

I found that site, but the label has long been scrapped off so I can't identify the exact model to order the bits. Can't find any 'serial' numbers stamped on it. Maybe once the MOT is sorted i'll go back to it and see if I can find the model number hidden about it's body.

Half price sale is on again!

Richard, what part is broken ?
I have a Halfords 3 ton garage jack, very similar to your old one, and I broke the spring that holds the arm up, I ended up buying one for a Sealey "Yankee" model which fitted perfectly.

I also had problems with leaking fluid from the plunger at the bottom of the handle, for that I had to buy about 100 new O rings, I only needed 1 but to get the size I needed I had to buy in quantity ! At least I've got a few spares now.

The jack bit. Over the last few years it's lift got weaker and weaker. Topping up with fluid did not help, then one another attemp to fix it I draind all the oil and to replace it and found after refilling it, it no longer worked. I think it's good a proper dead.

But if I can get one of the 'halfords' ones cheap will be worth a punt. :D Will pop in on the way home.
