Just thought I'd let you all know I'm looking at changing the forum software. You may have noticed the forum is slower these days and I believe this is down to the number of posts we have and the forum / database we are using.

We are also experiencing problem with new users not being able to sign up, which is of course a pretty bad thing !

I've installed the new software and am in the process of test importing all the posts and users, plus configuring the new forum to look at least a little bit like the current one.

I'll keep you all posted on my progress. :)
 
Yes, I'm testing phpbb3, although it looks like I will have to import the data through an old phpbb2 and then upgrade to phpbb3.... Oh what fun !

Support for Ikonboard seems to be dwindling, phpbb is the most popular, and there are quite a few etc bits and pieces for phpbb, so it should be good !

Will it still be moderated ?? ???
Surely this also adds to slowing it down ?
It definately stops the proper flow of conversations happening between members!!
As you moderate anyway,then all you have to do is delete ANY posting that is inapropriate,and warn the offender,that they risk dismissal from the forum if they offend again!
We can all be good boys and girls and be trusted to talk proper like wot adults do!! 'onest guv!!!
I think that 1yr is enough to get the point across!!
 
What's the security like on PHPBB these days? I had one running a few years ago and it got hacked. All they did was kill the board as the server running it was only running it so they had no access to anything else. From what I remember it was because I left JavaScipt enabled by mistake on the posts.
 
Yeah, security is always a concern on these things, a few years ago our current forum software allowed hackers to attack the server, but an upgrade fixed the problem. So I'm pretty keen to make sure phpbb is secure. Being just about the most popular forum software means it gets the most attention from hackers and also the most work to make it secure, so hopefully that keeps the developers on their toes !

Will the new forum software allow for instant messaging integration (MSN, Yahoo, Skype)?? If so, this will allow our forum to continue to be moderated (for the protection of the club) but allow members to break out for a chat in real time.

Let's face it, a forum isn't really an ideal place for a chat, but integrated with a IM tool, now that would be the best of both worlds....

Well, it's been a while, so I thought I'd update everybody on the progress with the new forum.

This has been accelerated by the fact that there is an error on the current system which is preventing new members signing up !

I have finally completed a succesfull test upgrade from our current Ikonboard to phpbb v2 to phpbb v3 (don't ask why, but you can't go straight to v3). I still need to build a "skin" for the new phpbb, i.e. the colours, layout and "P6ROC" bits, but that shouldn't take too long.

I'm hoping to convert to phpbb over the weekend, so you may see the forum closed for a while.

Will this mean the end of the moderating all posts and answers before displaying them ???
This would also help the club in the long run,and hopefully gain back a few disgruntled members,like me!! And get some new ones to join up as well!!
I think its definately about time to take a step forward in the trust of members to behave themselves when posting!!
If ??? One or 2 idiots still just cant control themselves and do mis-behave then chuck them out!!
