New Acquisition: Adventures in Austineering 1928 16/6 Burnham

Yes the motoring lexicon has changed over the years from Strangler to Choke, now in the modern day with fuel injection and soon to be all electric future generations will be totally flummoxed and think it's something related to incar entertainment and Mike Myers.
 
Bought a new paint gun as a contingency plan in case I decide to do a repaint ( with the original Primrose).
Already had a gun (new) but this one is so much better the new one has a better spray tip size of 1.4 mm so will be good for cellulose lacquer while my other gun is 1.7 mm so that will be good for heavier base coats.

I bought the same spray gun about 2 weeks ago to respray my door bins I acquired off trademe. I found it very easy to use and doesn't need a high capacity air compressor to get the job done .

A German paint gun manufacturer just won a $10 million dollar judgement against Italco for Trade Mark and IP infringement and googling the company now finds zip for this model guns as I suspect they were the ones in contention and all info and sales paths are being closed off.

Reading reviews of the manufacturers guns is interesting in that they all say the are excellent but there is always the bias against Chinese made product, deserved or not, but looking at these guns and my one I am blown away by the quality and can understand why the German maker was upset as these are every bit as good but at a fraction of the price, even so they are not cheap dollar wise either.

At the place I bought mine they couldn't beleive how cheap they were told to mark them down to, I will be buying a couple of spring and seal kits while they are available, should also buy a different nozzle size while I am at it.
Bit tempted to buy a LVLP gun while I am at it too but the reason I got the LVMP gun was my compressor size is not large and will work out better.

Latest saga(s) with my Austin, ordered a Petcock for the outlet of the Autovac ( Vacuum petrol suction pump) as the original 96 year old one was leaking left, right and centre.
Took 3 months to arrive off Aliexpres, when it arrived yesterday and I removed the old on I discovered that Mr Austin, bless his cotton socks had used an 1/8 BSP one end and a 1/4 BSP the other !! who does that, needless to say my new Petcock would not do.
Only reason I figured to get a new one was at 96 years old the original was bound to be shagged but now faced with no alternatives I had to refurbish the old one and as I had guessed it bore many many signs of past abuse internally but with nothing to lose but my sanity I embarked on lapping the old tap in with very fine grinding / polishing paste. Success! it worked, leaks all gone from the tap.

I was going to familiarise my self with the lubrication system and oil changes so consulted the owners manual to see what was what.

After consultation I set out to find the oil filter only to discover it was not there! Consulting with the previous owner and car re builder he confirmed it didn't have one and that many others in his collection seemed to have this minor useless inconvenience of a component missing too.

Hmmm what to do, the oil filter is a bit rare to find 96 years after the fact so I consulted another VAR member who has the exact same model and year as my car, he too had removed the old filter a few years back and upgraded to something a little more modern.

It is of course only a bypass filter system and I could probably do with out it, just change the oil more often ( as you do any way with a vintage) and many other cars have had them missing with no ill affect this past 50 or so years but I think I have found the next minor project to do as per above photo, well that is apart from water tighting the cooling system and retaining the oil that copiously leaks out like all classic Brit cars of the early part of last century.

This 1928, fellow VAR members car is complete and original and well cared for...... may have to try and convince him to sell it to me as it will be so much less work to get where I need to be with this one.

This thread needs an update.

Was offered another 1928 16/6 Burnham for free as a parts car, picked that up on Monday and yester day picked up the remainder of the parts, forgot to take damn photos mutter mutter.

An 80% to 90% complete car with 2 engines and 2 gearboxes though missing some important bit but havent delved into the inside of the car which is fully stacked with spares.

I only needed 3 very minor parts for my existing car, 2 X back window lifts (winder handles) and 1 X an intermediary connecting part for the passenger's door lock so ended up with far far more than I need however the car really is too good to be just a parts car so I am looking at either restoring it to original or more excitingly I am looking at the possibility of fitting an electric motor as the drive unit maybe from a Nissan Leaf as these are easy to find and whilst not hyper powered offer more than 3 times the power of the original 40 HP petrol unit and there is loads of spare space for batteries in these by a factor of more than 3 for a modern chassis.

Plus there is the coolness factor of pulling up into an EV charging bay in car park in your 1928 Vintage car and watching the looks as people try and work out what the fu@k is going on.

The original thought was restore the 2 spare engines into one however this would be very expensive and quite a few of the needed ancillary parts like auto-vac, generator and god knows what else seem to not be there making the restoration a potential nightmare.

Not going to tell you how to suck eggs -but my P6 is now an official member of our local well endowed VCC; albeit post vintage classic.
Ive found the fellas basically all car buffs and have been amazing at helping out under the bonnet and car itself.
I replaced the P6 rear drive bushes with the aid of their car hoist and array of tools. It actually got quite crowded under there for a bit wanting to check out the DeDion rear.
Some exotic machinery under restoration in sheds on the property and an impressive spares dept.
New lease of life for me after splendid isolation on the farm.
 
Hi, Yes, it's amazing the amount of people that are intrigued by the De Dion suspension. There are a few cars that have them but they are not common. I think it's down to cost for the manufacturer, especially when a beam axle is cheaper and a backward step, i'm looking at you SD1.

Member here in Christchurch too, scoured the extensive VCC parts shed for parts but there was not to much in the way of bits for a 1928 16/6 as opposed to 10's and 7's which still seem to litter the planet to this day.
Bought a Drivers door complete with good glass but missing door cards and winders but it did have a a single lever quick lift / drop window system ( reason for my purchase) though minus the important lever.
Will need to look again now that I have the second car as there were some internal bits to be had that are missing from mine.
 
Just got this 1928 Austin 16/6 a couple of weeks ago for free as a parts car as mentioned in a post 4 up but too good for that so I may look at doing a restoration on it, lots of spares also but somethings are missing.
Currently ( these photos) residing in my mum's garage awaiting a bigger workshop space to start the project.

Anything I might need to make I have my other complete road worthy 1928 16/6 to use to make patterns from.

Been on a small buying spree as a partially complete 1928 Austin 12/4 arrived at my local VCC club and I am in need of many bits for my project car and the odd bit or 3 for my roadworthy example.

I just couldn't pass up on these super rare parts which form the front seat back support bracket, shown here unpolished but for one ( now all polished up).

Also 3 Hobson Perfect Window Lifts , window winders for the uninitiated ( ie every one) which are scarcer than than the proverbial Dodo, 2 of which were missing from my Road worthy 16/6.
