Need advice on where to take my P6 project - Bodywork issues

I know someone who has an almost perfect base unit for sale near Bristol. Get in touch with Pilkie0, he`ll sort you out! :;):
I think the base unit, (more of a rolling shell really) which you are referring to is for a 4 cylinder car.

Hi its me,
kiltyarse is correct,I do have a restored base unit, but as harveyp6 says, it is for a 2000tc of 1973 vintage, so not suitable for any v8.
Still 4 sale if anyone wants it, its going cheap now as I need the space. E or PM me if you know anyone. :p

Just out of curiosity, not that I plan to do this, necessarily!

I assume that the 3500 body panels, doors, dash, interior etc will still fit a 2000 base unit, but that the base unit needs too much modification to take the V8 in the engine bay and transmission tunnel?

However, has anyone ever put a more modern engine under the bonnet of a 2000?

I am thinking of the Rover T series 2.0L with it's 140bhp, or even the T series with turbo giving more than 200bhp? Or even a KV6 2.5L form a 75? Apologies if the thought upsets the purists. As JC will tell you, I have a thing about the K and KV6 engines :p

The reason for my thinking here is that the V8 engine in JC's car is likely to end up in his BGT, so what with a good donor, a decent 2000 base unit, and a more modern engine - well the alternative would be to scrap the car!

What sort of price for the base unit, Pilkie?

Hi martin,
you're correct on the eng bay mods needed!!!
but how about a diesel mile muncher!!!!!!:p
I was going to build it as a rally replica,as the eng and box are v good and are still in it at present, but are also for sale.I would let the whole thing go, bodyshell, running gear, wiring, brakes, eng, 4sp box, but no panels, wings were shot, doors ive kept, the webasto roof was knackered but I sold it!!! all for a very fair £???, or without the eng/box £???. I will pm you with the £££s.
pm me if anyones interested
My tr6 is calling!! paint me!!! paint me NOW!!! and, so I need to free some space and the ££s for its respray. :p

chris it is possible to get soild rust free base units that have never been welded. I know because there is one in my Garage. Being relaistic of course as its been use since 1972 there are little areas of what you may expect underneath of slight rust/surface rust, but as these are well protected and reqularly, once a year cleaned and re-treated with anti rust wax they done get any worse. I will never need to weld this car, nor, if yearly rust protection maintenance undertaken will the next owner. And this maintenance work will be no more than the same required to any fully restored car that is used regulalry in all weather and its condition to be maintained.
its a 2000sc auto so some say its the least desirable, and granted its not as fast as a V8, so you give up the luxury of being able to overtake so often, but sit back, travel at 50 in a much more relaxed style .... car might be up for sale soon doing some MOT prep this weekend (brakes) and service as its time someelse got all the attention from admiring glances etc (just to remind me its the car, not me!):D

Well, thankyou all for your honest responces to my questions.
Not completely sure what is going to happen to my P6 at the moment.

On a lighter note having looked at the original 3500S doors, they appeir to be salvagable so it looks like I wont be needing to swap out the frames from those perfect MK1 doors with the sealed rear quaterlights.
So, if anyone wants a set of doors for a mk1 p6 pm me or email me on jc_moulds@hotmail.com with a silly offer. The doors are currently in Kingshurst which is on the outskirts of birmingham.

Im hanging on to all the original parts off my P6 for now as I hope to be able to do something with them. :D

I'm currently working on installing the T series engine into a 2000 shell.
Sherpa gearbox fits straight on the back, and of course its a lot smaller and lighter than a 2000 engine ! With roughly the same power as the V8, plus you can choose from 180 / 200 bhp turbo versions as well, and then you can tune from there, the most I've seen from a T series is 800bhp ! in a rover 25....

I've have also seen them used in MGB's, have a look at Marko Cosic's Website

Great web-site, lots of useful info. I have seen one magazine refer to the T series as Rover's Cosworth because of the tuning potential! I have also heard of a few in MGB GTs but have yet to get a few pictures, at this stage I only have an O series conversion featured on my website at www.upgrades4mgs.co.uk along with a couple of K series.

The K series 1.8 turbo would also be interesting as it approx 80kgs lighter than a T series and wil take the Ford Type 9 box, and again can be pushed to near 200bhp no doubt a big improvement in handling with the weight reduction.

And then there's the 2.0 TDI from the 25/45 cars...

I like the sound of both those options Martin. I think the torque of a diesel would suit the character of the P6 rather well, but I'd be inclined to try and source a VW Audi group five or six cylinder one to try and preserve the luxury charcter of the car. A diesel four sounds a bit too gruff to me!

Or 2.5 TDi from the 800, not the greatest engine in the world, but produces about 140bhp and runs happily on veg oil !

he he I chuckled at this line about the T16 Land Rover from COSIC website:
"still manages to get 30mpg despite having 200bhp on tap and my fairly unsympathetic driving style. Got the economy down to 20mpg once but also stuck it on its roof in a ditch in the process, so its fair to say that despite my best efforts it has failed to guzzle fuel as quickly as the 2.25 did or a V8 would."

I currently own this 3.5 V8 which I am led to believe has only done 28,000 miles.

The 'D' posts are solid and the car has never been welded. The sills are good as I took the O/S one down to bare metal to check. There is a minimal amount of work/weldng required on this base unit. I have the V5 and it is currently SORN'ed. I have had to stop work on this as finances are not good. I am open to offers though if you are interested. Here are a few shots of the outer sill (I can e-mail other phots if req'd) The car is 5 mins from Junction 30 of the M1 and the spares I have are too long to list (Like a complete set of brand new rear bushes which cost me over £300 or door to glass seals imported from Australia).

That last photo is an excellent example of what the underfloor / sill area should look like !

That car is far too good to scrap, and would be an easy first project for somebody. I read in the P6 news that Ian Trapp was looking for low mileage projects, might be worth getting in touch, send an email to chairman@p6roc.com
