My mean green hornet

Awesome work. Not quite sure what the pros are with losing the boot space though. Is it just to get better access to the rear axle?

Richard

Thanks Richard.
Initially it was an aesthetically motivated move, but has weight saving, better aero, more room for exhausts. I’m going to uprate the top link mounts to a chunky double shear design directly off the chassis rail too.

So the other side sill is now finished to the same stage as the first, and attention has turned to the fun stuff: the rear wing and arch areas.
I have split one wing along its peak whilst attached to the car to keep it rigid and straight. Cleaned up both halves and epoxied. These are going to be joined with a flat sheet section to stretch the wings out 80mm.

The tubs are going to be extended with another section to suit.
Something like an upscaled version of this test piece I did

Today I made a new D post strengthener, but with an inward 90 return flange to spot to the extended tubs

Finally a re mockup of the rear axle to check measurements. I noticed I’d assembled the DeDion tube the wrong way round after taking the shots

Superb Jim
The fun part will be getting your door to fit the new D post. I have almost got my doors weather tight, almost ;)

Thanks Mark, yeah will certainly be fun :D
Well here’s the money shots, got the first wing roughed out in metal today, with new arch profile and 80mm increased width following factory body lines.

I dug out my bootlid and decker panel to get a better impression of how it's evolving. Nice and wide, but not drastically out of proportion. A quick measure up reveals the new projected overall width is still just a touch narrower than my daily driver Volvo V70. Goes to show just how narrow these cars are in context.

Looking at the rear end of your wing makes me wonder if you have thought about changing the rear light clusters for something a little more modern? If you cut off the protruding end where the original light fits and flat plated it right across you could fit pretty much any arrangement of lights you wanted. Perhaps some individual round ones like later TVR's used?

IIRC the outer face of the tyre moved out 90mm on mine. As you say, the cars are very narrow to begin with.

How about doubling up with two P6 rear lamp clusters either side. Perhaps a bit too baroque. If I get bored I'll Photoshop it.

There's a lot changing with the car so certain key elements need to remain so it is still recognisable as a P6.
I had lots of thoughts about changing the rear lights but ultimately they are synonymous with the rear view.
That's a curved 80mm extension strip at only the very early metalwork stage. The only part I'm thinking of tweaking is perhaps softening the sharp line at the rear light fill panel. But again, in the flesh it flows nicely, should be good with bodywork and paint.
The main thing is to keep it simple enough to replicate the other side without too much trouble whilst also maintaining key Rover lines.
Rear lamp clusters are modded internally with halo ring LEDs

Got this fancy cnc milled aluminium mounting plate for Optima battery fitment in the post so decided to mock a few bits back up in the new boot area to see how it’s all working now.

I rolled the wheel tub extensions today and fitted one side. Coming together nicely and adding a lot of strength to the area.
I’ll make a single lower closing panel with matching bead profile to finish the sill.

Looking at that plate it appears to be for an Optima red top. This is a job that has been on my to do list for ever. I have a red top and it just fits in the stock battery box, but it is so heavy !!!!! and acts as a massive pendulum. I looked at race batteries, but not really practical for everyday use.
So central mounted down low is the way to go in my case.
Does that base plate come with any top restraint ?

Nice going on the tubs BTW.

Yeah it 34/78 fitment from memory which is available red, blue and yellow top versions. There’s 2 clamping plates front and back which hold the ‘feet’ between the cylindrical shapes. I think will be more than secure like that, and keeps the installation nice and clean.
I got it on eBay from a uk reseller, most on there ship from China of course, but either way about £40.

Nothing too exciting today, but essential progress nonetheless.
Filling in a few of the puzzle pieces over the newly extended wheel tub.
This area had been messed about with poor quality previous repairs, tacked on plates and rough hammer work.
I’m making these panels with 90 degree returns to match the wheel tub radius.
