My car wont go into gear

I recently bought an Rover P6 2200 TC 1976 model and drove it home. It was a bit difficult to get into and change gears. Later that day the car got stuck in reverse and i couldnt get it out of reverse. I backed the car all the way back to my house when suddenly the gear "popped" out of reverse and in neutral. Now i cant seem to get the car into any gear. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

The selector striker lever can wear to the point that it jumps out of the grooves in the selector rods. The first thing I would do is get the car raised and supported far enough off the ground that you can get underneath and look to see what has happened.

Maybe you should take the car to a local mechanic, and have them look over it.

You certainly don't want to play around with putting the car in the air, if you only have jackstands and don't really know what you're doing.

I've read in the repair manual, and I'm pretty sure it's the selector lever that i need to adjust. But how do i get to reach it? Do i need to take down the whole gearbox?

First of all get a good look at it from underneath the car to make sure that is the problem. If it is then the rear of the gearbox has to be dropped to allow the remote to be removed. If you are a novice mechanic I wouldn't recommend doing this as a first job.
