My boot won’t open.

Hi. Newbie here. I’m Jim. I’ve just bought a 1974 P6 2200TC. Delighted as my very first car was a 2200TC. Car hasn’t yet been delivered, but I do know from the vendor that the boot won’t open. Any ideas or shortcuts you folks could help me with? Cheers.

No other way to get into the boot unfortunately.
I would try some CRC into the lock and leave over night and try again with the key.
For all your troubles -Hopefully there will long lost treasures in there.

Failing the CRC method, I would get a locksmith to deal to it. You dont want to bugger the mechanism with DIY.

The boot key should be the same as the one for the fuel flap and glove boxes, assuming nothing’s been changed. Do you know if the lock is actually jammed, or if the key for the boot is just missing?

Thanks for the replies. I was assured all the keys are present. I’ll wait until the car is delivered and try using CRC. Failing that there is a local locksmith who is reasonable on his prices. I’ll let you know how I get on. Thank you again.

Unless the push button/catch is broken - which I haven't heard of before - it should be just a key issue or stuck button.

Your welcome when you get the car and if you still can’t get in send me a PM and I can send you some details on how to open it.

Thanks. I’m really grateful. I’m looking forward to it arriving. It’s pretty rotten. Base unit in parts, near side front floor pan. Off side sill cover is rusted so I dare say the sill is too. Luckily I’m covered for welding and fabrication. Bottom of drivers door is bad, contemplating perhaps a good used door. It’s a keeper, it’ll take as long as it takes so to speak.

When your driving it around it will make all the hard work you put in feel worthwhile there great to drive a P6 is a lot of fun and can keep you entertained with hours of work :D

Whilst we are on the subject of locks, the drivers side one of mine has half a key in it! What's the best way to get it out? (I've tried pliers and can't get enough purchase)

You should try first with a suitably sized pair of tweezers, if the key isn't rusted in. If it's stubborn, you have to work from inside the door and take the barrel out to disassemble it.

Oil up the lock then get a thin wire with teeth on the wire if you can like cheese wire but stronger or scuff up a thin piece of wire.
Then incert the wire at the top of the lock above the key slide the wire in gently soon as the wire is over the key pull wire towards you but also downwards it can take some time
Or a very sharp pointed scissors if you can see the key

I’ve heard of using hot glue to stick the remaining half of the key to the broken bit inside. This looks like it will only work if the key snapped flush on the surface, and is only broken, not physically stuck. Not actually tried it myself.

Your welcome hobby let us know if you manage to get it out if not we will think of other things good luck with it ;)

Fret saw blade.
Grind the back off so you have a long point, have the teeth pointing toward you and insert over the teeth of the key and try to hook some saw teeth over a ridge on the key and pull.

Sometime people dont know how to unlock a P6, I have seen clever people struggle. If you have owned one though it will be no problem.

It you can get a key to tun in the lock it should open, I have had one broken in the past.

In case it has been a long time since you last openned a boot. try putting the key in and just turn the key, and listen for a click, remove the key and push the button, you should feel resistance. You dont put the key in and turn the opposite way, listen for the click and push the button.

Common causes of not being able open in debris getting near the catch on the inside preventing it releasing. The catch also can slide especially if someone has had a go at it.

If you get resistance when pressing the button repeatedly press it in and out whilst pushing down on the number plate plinth, this can help bump it open.

If all fails and your boot floor and inner wings dont have a handy rust hole, you can get in via the battery box if it isnt secured or you can cut it out.

Worse case senario get another lid, they are pretty easy to get and cut the lock out.

I have had a similar problem. There is an adjustment, however you need to open the boot to do the adjusting. Turn the barrel one way with the key. Then push on briskly many times with your thumb. Eventually it should pop open. If something has move backwards inside then this makes it harder to open the boot. If this does not work try turning the key the other way and try again.
