misfire/fail to start

Hi all, I went to the bucket and spade run today. I got to the meet up point with no issues. I was parked up about hour and a half car started on the choke fine but started to misfire slightly because I was sat waiting for a chance to join the exit queue. on the exit we had to pull over to let some other cars into the field. Because it was popping and spluttering a bit I switched it off. then it wouldn't start. two of the organisers gave me a push and it started ok. By the time we got onto the duel carriageway about 25 miles later it started misfiring and lurching. felt like someone was pulling on the handbrake but the wheels weren't locking. Apon leaving Ramsgate this afternoon soon as I was out of the town and on the duel carriageway it started misbehaving again.

I have striped and rebuilt the carbs twice with a new gasket set the second time. I have had three different people set the carbs up and they have all said they are fine and where they should be. I have replaced the coil as the connection spades on the coil were loose and new ht leads. Only difference to the misbehaving is the new coil seems to of made this worse.

it is almost as if I have two faults one on the low tension side and one on the high tension side.

When I got home and the engine had cooled enough for me to get near it with out burnt knuckles I took the plug out of the passenger side bank nearest the rad and it was as black as the ace of spades.

If it is running rich although three separate people swear blind it isn't. how else could the plugs get black?

anything else to try?

many thanks

black plugs is as you stated--running rich----have you got a leak on inlet manifold (open up when hot) this could cause your problem mate

So, it started on choke and started misbehaving immediately with signs of rich mixture?
Check the choke that feeds that bank for a sticking choke mechanism. Mine did that and
I found the newly fitted kit had not been particularly well done and the choke was sticking
in the full on position.

+1. Had this with a neighbors car last year. It would run perfectly, then after a restart could start chugging, misfiring and blowing black smoke. One of the carbs had the choke stuck half ways open.

One of my cars also has a habit of misfiring, lurching and loosing power, occasionally. Have you noticed the car sound like it was only running on 4 cylinders at any point?

Regards,
Dave
