mig welding gauges

Looking for some advice regarding gauges for my new mig.

first off I bought a sip machine and it came with a regulator (09025) with one gauge which is contents. I was hoping it would have twin for which would give me a flow. I suppose that they just have to screw you for an extra £50 which sticks in my craw.

I need to get a better idea of how much gas I am using because I am using a bit too much which could be down to me adjusting to the new machine and welding upside down.

so what alternatives do I have to buying a new twin regulator? I thought the gauge could be bought as a spare part and fitted to the spare/blanked off hole on my regulator but havent found anything suitable.

what gas u using im sure I bought a twin gauge for my argon (hobby weld) for around 25 quid. ill try dig out the website.

cant find the site off hand if I can remember where I put the bloody gauge ill see if there is a brand name on it.

It is the hobbyweld 5 I have been using.

Will have a look at the link, cheers dave. Used a tank to do a sill and used another today doing chassis rail repairs on my rover 216. I had set the gas at a low point where it seemed ok but must have been too much.

Welding upside down is no fun either with gas or gas less wire.

Hi, try using the flowmeter as a secondary regulator. A friend had one on his machine and it's
very frugal on gas, if your welding inside you can turn it right down and you may have to turn
it up when outside. It is I think supposed to be 10ltr per min but as I say you can get away with
less inside, just experiment until you get it to use as little as possible. they are available on
Ebay for less than the site already listed. Check for leaks on the machine because that usage
seems a bit extreme.

ive got one of those wescol twin regulators attached to my hobbyweld cylinder. I used nowhere near as much gas as you;ve used, think I'm on my second or third tank and ive done an entire rear corner of my p6, a sill, floor repair, and door frame on a mini and some of that was outside where I had to turn the flow up a bit to counteract the breeze! the cost of one of the regulators to get a decent idea of flow is about the same cost as a refill of gas so youll claw that back quickly enough.
also I found out the hard way to make sure you turn the gas off at the tank when your finished, even a small leak between the bottle and the valve can vent a lot of gas off, use some soapy water to check for leaks.

I will need to get something today, I did look at the 20l hobbbweld tanks which comes with the gauges on the cylinder. £195 deposit and the refills work out at just a bit cheaper.

The smaller tank will be easier to handle should my gf need to pick one up for me.

I need to get this welding sorted today, only have a bit of finishing off todo.

Cheers

Right I am now sorted.

The main hobby weld depot is not very far away from me so I went there to get more gas and a gauge. Helpful guys.

I asked about the ultra bottles and he reckons the have about 4 times the gas than the standard size. Which is interesting because the refill is only about double the price.

I bought a bead type flow meter which I have added to the original regulator. I am happy with this as it means I dont have a new but useless gauge taking up space.

Also tightend the clamp on the mig. It wasnt as tight as it could have been.
