mg gearbox

It should bolt to the engine OK, but I can see there being clearance issues around the overdrive in the transmission tunnel, particularly on 3500S cars because the manual box is pretty short, and the tunnel narrows. I should think that the gearlever would be in a different position as well. The LT77/R380 is a proven conversion.....

hi harvey p6. my car was originally an auto so are you saying tunnel is wider.

If you want an MGB overdrive box, l have one going spare. I was planning on fitting it to my Oxford Traveller but enquiries revealed that quite a bit of panel work is also needed to fit it in there too. So l'm going with an MGB 3.9 differential instead, which is far less work & has a similar outcome.

The auto tunnel is wider than the manual up to the rear of the gearbox, after that they are the same AFAIK.
thank you. that explains why i cannot get to the gearbox filler plug through the hole in the tunnel if they are different.

The auto had an access for the rear band adjuster on the driver's side (RHD), the manual box filler access is on the passenger side.

i have one on the passenger side. when you remove the bung all you can get to is the prop bolts

There is a Costello V8 forum i found by accident earlier today. Costello did early MGBV8 conversions including their own 5 spped box (apparently with Synchro reverse...) they discuss the Standard box with V8 and say that third gear + overdrive didn't work but otherwise was ok unless you are racing it...

The 5 speed with synchro reverse will be an R380, apparently an uprated LT77 done for the police. Also fitted to Disco II - had one myself.

The R380 in 2WD guise was fitted to the Sherpa, I believe, but they look to be getting scarce nowdays.

Sowen had one or two of them back when he was active here.
