metallic knocking front passenger side

Mines got so many different rattles and bangs they drown themselves out! And who needs a radio with a V8?!

Mick

Don't think the side rod is the cause of the noise but does no harm to change it because of the slight movement. May just have to live with it.

Don't admit defeat just yet. The siderod needs changing anyway, so see if there's any improvement after that. If not, look at the bonnet hinge.

Do the shock absorbers have the original style mounts using the two conical rubber bushes or do they have a parallel bush with a metal insert ? What make are the shocks ?

Will the ones with the metal insert actually fit over the pin? I did say they should be twin taper bushes and presumed they were when I didn't hear any different. Anyway, I'm sure the OP will be along to elucidate further soon.

I bought AVO units for mine and yes they had a steel insert and yes it fitted over the pin, I believe GAZ use the same mount. I tried everything to try to stop them rattling and failed.
I cut off the mounts and welded on the original mounts from the old shocks and bought fresh conical rubbers and the rattles stopped.

If that's the case you're never going to be able to stop them rattling. P*ss poor design for that particular application.

A bit drastic, but you weren't going to be able to do anything else really.

Yup was not best pleased, what can you do ? arguing the toss with a manufacturer is not going to get the car on the road, so bit the bullet and went for it. Have been pleased with the outcome, but not everyone can go the shed and fire up the MIG and get sorted. Poor show really on the supplier end, but it seems that's how it is with a lot of things, and its not the case of buying cheap either, even 'high' end costly stuff simply isn't made right.

Ah ha, finally cracked it. when fitting the new side rod arm I noticed that the pads rattled as there was no anti rattle springs fitted. why fit pads without them don't ask me. New springs will be fitted both sides once they arrive. Harvey , bonnet hinges are all ok.

You must have good hearing to hear those rattling. I used to be able to, but I'm far too deaf nowadays. Even with the anti-rattle springs fitted, I still ended up wiring the pins together sometimes.

getting back to the noise problem, how can a shock absorber be fitted in the wrong hole, I can only see one hole on my suspension?

Peter

I also have an annoying rattle from the rear left hand side, even removed the door trim to see if anything loose and found the rusted window lifter and wrong door opening shaft and mechanism (other post) , could it be a shocker as in this general post?

The pin the shock absorber is mounted on has two holes in it, the one nearest the base unit is for the retaining pin to go in, the one nearest the end is for the installing tool that compresses the rubber bush to go in.

Ahhh now I understand, thanks for the reply...
Peter

I now have 2 pb6 sedans and notice when parked side by side that one sits lower at the rear.
Is it a known problem of the springs sagging, is there a measurement for the length of the spring that can be checked?
