LT77 Gearbox Question

AFAIK it's exactly the same box. Only one that was different (better) was the Rover Vitesse, all the rest, as long as they're 5 speed ones are the same, be they 2300, 2600, 3500SD1, or TR7. Freight Rover vans are also the same, but with far lower ratios, so are best avoided.

I bow to Harvey's superior knowledge but I'd read that 2300 and 2600 boxes were weaker

Not as far as I know, but all I would say is that the few 4 speed units around which IIRC only went in the 2000/2300 on very basic models are the ones to be avoided. My recollection is that the earlier boxes were weaker, but all the same through the range, and the box in the Vitesse was the upgraded one. They're all fine in a P6B, you'll be breaking the diff long before you'll break an LT77, whichever one you choose to use.

From what I know, the best way is to look at the serial number of the gearbox to tell what it came out of and what spec it is. The best ones to go for are the suffix D boxes, which I believe were only fitted to the sd1 vitesse, and had some larger bearings than the suffix A-C boxes as fitted to the rest of the sd1 2000-v8 range.

Hello everyone. I didn't want to start a new thread as this is also an LT77 related question/s...

I have an SD1 'box retrofitted to my P6 and I'm having problems with a leaky clutch slave cylinder. As I know a few of you have them fitted also, I was just wondering what slave cylinders you have fitted? P6 or SD1? and is there any/much difference? At the moment I'm topping up the clutch/brake fluid level every few days. As the car was previously my Dads I asked him, but he cannot recall which clutch slave cylinder he used.

Thanks, Will.

There is a difference between the SD1 and P6 3500S slave cylinders, the P6 one needs a 1/4" spacer between it and the bellhousing, the SD1 one doesn't, but needs a metric fitting fitted to the end of the clutch flexible pipe. SD1 cylinders are more plentiful and cheaper so that would be the way I would go.

Thanks harvey, I'll go with the Sd1 slave cylinder in that case. :)

On the subject of SD1 gearboxes my P6 has one fitted and the speedo drive at the gearbox end has been botched and stripped, I'm now looking for a drive pinion / transducer orange with 20 teeth to get me through the MOT and on the road again, Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
