Hi, They're not great shards, they're small steel filing which when joined to all the other filings by magnetic attraction look way worse than they probably are. The old Minis used to be the same when doing an oil change with the drain plug coming out looking like a christmas tree. Which goes to show that the magnet is doing its job by taking them out of circulation, if it wasn't there you would have no idea. Don't over think it, it will let you know if there's a problem.
